Viana Do Alentejo offers a range of ways to shape your stay: architectural history, religious traditions, exhibitions and recurring events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Viana Do Alentejo, you can first decide whether the castle and its fountains, collections or a scheduled event should define your stay. For Feira D’Aires and Romaria a Cavalo, the calendar is part of your planning; for individual sights, check opening hours and access options.

Castle and churches in the Castelo complex

The architectural complex of Castelo de Viana do Alentejo, classified as a national monument, includes a walled enclosure, Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação, Igreja da Misericórdia de Viana do Alentejo, Capela de Santo António and the former Capela de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The latter now serves as an interpretation centre for the complex. Castelo comprises five stretches of wall, with cylindrical towers topped by roof structures at the corners.

Igreja Matriz was built around 1521 in the Manueline style and is attributed to Diogo de Arruda. Since 2013, Igreja da MisericĂłrdia has hosted temporary exhibitions. The complex thus brings together different forms of church architecture and a history of exhibitions. Castelo de Viana do Alentejo is listed as open to visitors; check before your trip whether access is currently possible.

Collections and exhibitions

At Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires, Casa dos Milagres houses a collection of popular and religious art that is open to visitors. The objects include old photographs, wedding dresses, braided locks of hair and early votive offerings. The collection offers a different focus from the architecture of Castelo: here, personal and religious objects take centre stage.

The permanent exhibition “Memórias Daqui e D’Além” is on the first floor of Viana do Alentejo’s former library building. It opened on 22 September 2022 and can be visited Tuesday to Saturday, from 09:30 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:30. Check visiting hours before your trip.

The first exhibition at NĂşcleo MuseolĂłgico explores the archaeological heritage identified and collected so far throughout MunicĂpio de Viana do Alentejo. It presents the history of settlement and land use in the area that now forms part of the municipality over the last five to six millennia. Its historical scope therefore extends far beyond the architectural history of individual churches and fountains.

Feira D’Aires, Romaria and Caminho Nascente

Feira D’Aires takes place around the sanctuary of the same name. It is religious in character and attracts thousands of worshippers. It falls on the fourth Sunday in September and lasts four days. The programme also includes a Levante market and an exhibition of economic activities and traditional trade. Music plays an important role, with performances on the main stage as the highlight. Check the specific event dates if you are planning your trip around it.

Another event is Romaria a Cavalo: the procession travels from Moita to Viana do Alentejo along the former royal drovers’ route and usually takes place on the last weekend in April. The two religious events therefore differ in both their route and the time of year. Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires is also a required stop on Caminho Nascente, which passes through the Freguesia Viana do Alentejo.

Fountains and crafts as traces of local history

The fountains also tell the story of different uses. Chafariz da Praça da Palha was built in 1904 and served as a municipal washhouse in the first decades of the 20th century. Fonte de Baixo, also known as Fonte das Freiras, was used by the Hieronymite nuns of Convento do Bom Jesus. Fonte da Renascença is also known as Fonte dos Escudeiros or Fonte da Praça and is thought to correspond to the medieval Fonte Grande.

Fonte da Cruz was created in 1898 through a public collection; it may have been Viana do Alentejo’s first connection to a public water supply. The local craft heritage includes the Médico de Sousa pottery school in Viana do Alentejo, which opened up knowledge and training in pottery to anyone who wanted to learn. Together, these examples offer insight into architecture, everyday history and craft training, without requiring visitors to focus on just one aspect.
