In Portel, discoveries range from a 13th-century castle to waterside spots. Churches and museums tell stories from different periods; the Montado landscape and astronomical observation offer other points of interest. You can tailor your focus on cultural history, nature and leisure by the water to suit your interests.
Castle and Churches Through the Centuries
Castelo de Portel was founded in 1261 by D. João Peres de Aboim. Extensive building work followed under the rule of Manuel I, led by the architect Francisco Arruda. A different historical layer is represented by today’s Igreja Matriz: built between 1754 and 1766, it replaced a medieval parish church within the fortified town. These buildings therefore point to different periods in Portel’s history, rather than focusing on just one era.
The churches also make their architectural differences visible. Igreja da MisericĂłrdia is a 17th-century Baroque church, located beside the wall of Vila Velha. Inside are a gilded Baroque high altar and a Rococo gallery for the MisericĂłrdia members. Igreja do EspĂrito Santo has a ribbed vault and a two-tiered high altar in Baroque and Rococo forms. Here, “two-tiered” describes the division of the altarpiece into two levels.
The history of Igreja do EspĂrito Santo goes back further: it was built in the second half of the 13th century as a hostel with an adjoining church; in the 17th century, it became a royal hospital. Gold Baroque altarpieces and a wall painting on the dome of the main chapel define Ermida e Igreja de S. Pedro. Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Socorro is located in the church of the former Convento de SĂŁo Paulo and is an example of regional Mannerist architecture.
Art, Montado and Local Themes
Museu Maria Fernanda Toscano Rico displays the estate of the painter, who was born in Portel, in chronological order in the former hospital building. Museu do Medronho focuses on a plant: the exhibition explains medronho, its fruit, the plant’s life cycle and the distillation process. The museum also has a shop, a tasting counter and a distillation area. This lets you follow the subject from its botanical origins through to its production.
S. Pedro – Centro de Interpretação da Natureza e do Montado is four kilometres from Portel, at the highest point of the Serra, at an altitude of 422 metres. It focuses on the Montado landscape and Serra de Portel; its facilities also include equipment for astronomical observation with telescopes. Pavilhão Temático – A Bolota offers a sensory way to experience the Montado landscape: it explores the subject through the five senses and includes four themed rooms devoted to crafts, cork, heritage and sensory perception, as well as a shop.
Another trace of the past is Anta da Torrejona, a megalithic monument on the banks of the Alqueva reservoir, near Monte Moncarxa. This site connects an archaeological find with a specific landscape setting, adding a much older layer to Portel’s history of buildings and collections.
