The castle and churches give Alandroal a distinct focus on cultural history. At the same time, the municipality offers other perspectives: a river beach on the Alqueva Reservoir and a route where traces of earlier water management can be seen. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between building history, religious architecture and landscape.
Castle Complex and Building History
According to inscriptions, work on Castelo de Alandroal began in February 1294 and ended exactly four years later, in February 1298. The castle is divided into a keep and an alcáçova. There are two towers beside Porta Legal and another beside Porta do Arrabalde. The complex also includes the Torre de Menagem and the Torre dos Paços. The castle dates clearly predate the construction phases of Igreja da Misericórdia, which range from the 16th to the early 18th century.
Churches, Chapels and Cultural Heritage
Inside the castle is Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which is built against the Torre de Menagem. Igreja da Misericórdia offers a different architectural comparison: it consists of two adjoining churches. The older dates from the 16th century, while the newer was built in the late 17th or early 18th century. Notable interior features include a gilded carved altarpiece, two altars, an upper choir gallery and a marble pulpit. The churches therefore differ not only in their dates but also in how they relate architecturally to the castle and to one another.
The exact founding date of Ermida de São Sebastião is unknown; it was probably founded by the Senado de Alandroal sometime in the 16th century. A local legend links the construction of Ermida de S. Bento to the hermit João Sirgado: he is said to have prayed there every day, and the legend credits him with protecting the village from the deadly plague of 1580. Fonte das Bicas, meanwhile, is classified as an MIP – Monumento de Interesse Público, or Monument of Public Interest.
Landscape and Route
A contrasting landscape can be found at Praia Fluvial das Azenhas D’El Rei on the Alqueva Reservoir, within the municipality of Alandroal. The PR 1 Rota do Giro starts at Ermida de N. Sr.ª da Consolação and passes centuries-old giros. These once carried water from a spring to former gardens and orchards. The two landscape highlights are therefore distinct: at the river beach, the setting on the reservoir is the main attraction; on the route, it is the former use of water in the cultural landscape.
