In Évora Monte, the castle, historic walls, churches and walking routes offer different ways to experience the landscape and the town’s history. If you are considering a trip there, you can choose between different focuses, such as views, architecture and walking trails.

Castle Views and Medieval Walls

Castelo de Évora-Monte stands at one of the highest points in the Serra de Ossa. From the terrace of Torre do Castelo de Évora Monte, the view extends across the vast Alentejo peneplain from an elevation of more than 500 metres. As you walk along the medieval walls, you can see numerous whitewashed villages, small towns and cities across the plain. The view from the terrace and the sight along the walls offer different perspectives: one across the vast plain, the other of the settlements visible within it.

Military Architecture and Building History

The medieval walls of Évora Monte were built in 1306; four pointed-arch gates dating from the time of the town’s founding have been preserved. The fortified Paço Ducal of Évoramonte has four cylindrical towers arranged in a square plan; stone knots adorn the structure. The Torre, or Paço Ducal, is considered a unique Portuguese example of the transitional military architecture of the late Manueline style. The walls and the Paço offer distinct architectural highlights: the surviving gates on the one hand, and the tower design and stone decorations on the other.

Churches and Historical Traces

The church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also known as Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, was the first church in Vila Évora Monte; its first known mention dates from 1271. Its architecture is characterised by two Gothic pointed-arch doorways and a rectangular floor plan with three naves. Alongside the defensive structures, it offers a distinct perspective on the town’s building history.

Another historical trace is the church of São Pedro, which was already standing at the foot of Évoramonte in 1320. The first known mention of Nossa Senhora da Conceição dates from 1271; records show that São Pedro was already standing in 1320. The different dates refer to distinct historical milestones for each church.

Visiting Hours and Walking Routes

In both summer and winter, visiting hours for the Torre, or Paço Ducal, are 09:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:30. Plan your visit during one of these time slots and check the hours again before travelling.

Andar a Monte offers four designated walking routes: one runs within the walls, while the others are in the area around Castelo de Evoramonte. The route locations offer a practical point of comparison: inside the walls or in the area around the castle. Check current availability before your trip.

Regional Products

The historic building Celeiro Comum now houses a shop selling regional products. For travellers who want to include local produce in their choice of destinations, this adds a product-focused dimension to the architectural and landscape themes. If the shop is important to your plans, check its current status before making a special visit.
