Five gravel routes and one red BTT-XC route are part of the offer at the Centro de Cyclin’Portugal de Serra D’Ossa – Rio de Moinhos. Together, the routes cover 213.31 kilometres, of which 25.2 kilometres are signposted. The centre has changing rooms and sanitary facilities, a bicycle repair and washing station, and tourist information. It is located next to the parish football pitch.

One route with specific details is Percurso 11 Borba: the municipal route information, updated on 20 April 2023, lists it as an easy gravel route covering 7.8 kilometres. This individual route length can be considered alongside the total length of the routes at the Centro. The figures describe different scales and provide a specific reference point for planning.

Cycling Routes, Walking Trail and Serra d’Ossa

Rio de Moinhos is connected to and surrounded by the Serra d’Ossa. At the foot of the mountain range lies the Ermida de São Gregório, one of the starting points in Borba for visiting the Serra. Several cycling routes of the Centro de Cyclin in the Serra d’Ossa and the “Fantástica Serra d’Ossa” walking trail pass by the Ermida. The chapel is therefore a shared landmark on the cycling and walking routes mentioned.

A notice dated 5 August 2026 lists “Sextas em Movimento” as a weekly walking activity in Rio de Moinhos. It starts on Fridays at 20:45 at the Junta de Freguesia headquarters. Check in advance whether the date falls within your travel period.

Churches, Monuments and Local History

The Igreja Paroquial de São Tiago de Rio de Moinhos dates back to its foundation in the 13th century and is classified as a building of public interest. The church contains eighteen frescoes depicting episodes from the life and miracles of Saint James; they were painted in 1706. The building’s foundation history and the early 18th-century frescoes thus represent two distinct historical periods.

The Padrão de Montes Claros dates from the 17th century and is classified as a National Monument. It stands on Herdade de Travassos in Rio de Moinhos and commemorates the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Montes Claros, fought in 1665. Other points of interest include the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz and the Igreja de São Lourenço, located in Nora, within Rio de Moinhos.

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Vitória lies around two kilometres from Rio de Moinhos. From its elevated position, it offers views of the Serra da Ossa and the region’s marble quarries. The Ermida was built by order of the Prince Regent D. Pedro II and dedicated to the souls in purgatory. Its views and history offer two distinct ways to experience this nearby building.

Landscape and Local Life

The natural landscape of Rio de Moinhos brings together heritage, tranquillity and tradition. Agriculture and agro-industrial production also remain part of life in the village. Cheese and sausage production shape the parish’s economy; local food production is therefore part of the character of the place, not necessarily a tourist offering.

Former watermills have almost disappeared, but remain part of the local memory and identity of Rio de Moinhos. They are therefore part of the village’s history, even though they are not described as visitor attractions. A notice dated 5 August 2026 invites anyone aged eight and over to take part in the music and dance project of the Grupo de Danças e Cantares de Rio de Moinhos. You can register at the Junta de Freguesia de Rio de Moinhos.
