Arraiolos can be explored through two cultural strands: the history of its carpets and the town’s architectural heritage. The Centro Interpretativo do Tapete de Arraiolos is dedicated to textile craftsmanship; the Castelo, Convento and Igreja da Misericórdia each offer their own historical and artistic focus. When looking for accommodation, this distinction can help you plan your stay around the themes that interest you most.

Carpet History and Craftsmanship

The Centro Interpretativo do Tapete de Arraiolos is a permanent museum centre run by the municipality. Its topics range from the history, origins and influences of Arraiolos carpets to the craft of making them. It also covers carpet techniques and materials, as well as their artistic, material and technical development. This makes it possible to view carpet art not only as a finished pattern, but also as the interplay of production, materials and historical development. This focus offers a direct way in if the textile tradition itself is what draws you to Arraiolos.

Carpets in the Cultural Programme

The cultural event “O Tapete está na Rua,” supported by the municipality of Arraiolos, broadens the focus on carpets to include other local themes. Its cultural programme includes an exhibition of Arraiolos carpets. The exhibition takes place in Arraiolos’s historic centre and showcases local crafts, gastronomy and other local products. The event therefore also offers a chance to discover products from the town besides its carpets. Individual programme items may vary from one edition to the next.

Buildings and Historic Art

The Castelo de Arraiolos is a National Monument. The monument includes the walls of the former settlement and the Paços dos Alcaides. This offers an architectural perspective on the former settlement alongside the textile craft.

The Convento de São Francisco and its adjoining cemetery are classified as IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). The convent was founded in 1612. Inside is a gilded and polychrome high altar; polychrome means decorated in several colours. Wall frescoes depict scenes from the Old Testament. The interior thus features the altar and narrative wall paintings as distinct artistic elements.

In the Igreja da MisericĂłrdia de Arraiolos, the nave and transept are decorated with tile panels. They depict the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The MisericĂłrdia de Arraiolos was founded on 14 April 1524; the hospital was attached to it soon afterwards.

The Pelourinho de Arraiolos offers another historical reference point. It was probably erected following the granting of Arraiolos’s second charter by Manuel I in 1511. The qualification “probably” is part of this dating.

When to Visit and Planning Your Trip

The distinction between the museum and the event is useful when choosing when to travel: the Centro Interpretativo is a permanent museum centre, while “O Tapete está na Rua” is tied to specific editions. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the date and programme for the relevant edition. This lets you plan your stay either around this cultural programme or around the history of the carpets and the buildings and works of art described above.

The regular opening hours listed for the Centro Interpretativo do Tapete de Arraiolos are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am–1:00 pm and 2:00 pm–6:00 pm (information dated 18 August 2026). Check the hours before visiting.
