The Guadiana shapes the municipality of Alandroal, and the surroundings of the Alqueva reservoirs are also part of its natural landscape. Castles, churches and an archaeological sanctuary represent different eras. If you are looking for accommodation in Alandroal, you can plan your stay around what matters most to you: the river and night sky, architectural history or a hike.

The Guadiana, Alqueva and the night sky

At Praia Fluvial Azenhas d’El Rei, options on the river include boat trips, short cruises, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing. You can kayak to the Spanish river beach at Cheles on the opposite bank; the river is 50 metres wide between them. Yoga and Tai Chi sessions are also available. Activities may vary by season, so check in advance which options are available during your visit.

Stargazing is also possible here. Praia Fluvial is in the Dark Sky Reserve, which UNESCO considers a Starlight Destination. Alandroal is also one of the municipalities around Lake Alqueva that keeps public lighting to a minimum at night to preserve conditions for stargazing. The local restaurant at Praia Fluvial serves Alentejo dishes made with regional produce; check the restaurant’s opening and menu separately.

Castles, churches and archaeological traces

The construction history of Castelo de Alandroal is clearly dated: work began in February 1294 and was completed exactly four years later. The complex is divided into the Kastelejo and the Alcáçova. Inside the castle is Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, attached to the keep. Its architecture combines Manueline, Baroque and Neoclassical elements.

Igreja Matriz de São Pedro represents another period: it was already standing in 1394. A remnant of the later 16th-century structure survives in the main chapel. Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova was founded in the first half of the 14th century. A rare medieval fortified temple building in Portugal, it has a Greek cross-shaped floor plan and distinctly military architecture.

Ermida de São Sebastião also has a long building history: it was probably founded in the 16th century, extensively rebuilt in 1722 and substantially altered after damage from the 1755 earthquake. In Terena, the ruins of Povoado fortificado e Santuário de Endovélico form an important sanctuary dedicated to Endovélico. It has been classified as an IIP (Property of Public Interest) since 31 December 1997. About 80 Latin inscriptions are associated with the sanctuary, collected over the past four centuries.

Juromenha is known as the “Guardian of the Guadiana”: it stands on a raised hill above the riverbanks. Roman and Visigothic building materials were reused in its medieval structure.

Hiking and a striking rock formation

The ADL PR2 – Pedra Alçada trail in Santiago Maior is 9 kilometres long, measured from the parish council (Junta de Freguesia). It takes about three hours and is of moderate difficulty. Check trail conditions and signposting before setting out. The route passes through cork oak and holm oak montado woodland to Ribeira da Palha, whose water is described as clear and banks as green.

Pedra Alçada itself is a granite rock made up of two blocks, one resting on top of the other. It is 10 metres high and 6 metres in diameter. Igreja Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Santiago Maior also offers a historical point of interest: it was already a curacy church in 1534.

Crafts and cultural themes

Crafts in Alandroal range from basketry, metalwork and woodwork to Alentejo painting, marbleworking, textiles, lace and traditional river-fishing crafts. This variety offers a distinct way to engage with local culture, alongside the architecture and landscape.

Fórum Cultural Transfronteiriço de Alandroal has a 176-seat auditorium, a screening room, a café-concert area and exhibition spaces. A village choir in the municipality keeps the Alentejo musical tradition alive with songs that recall earlier rural traditions, hard agricultural labour and popular entertainment.
