The castle chapel at Hartenfels Castle in Torgau links a specific date with a special place in history: on 5 October 1544, Martin Luther inaugurated it with a celebratory sermon as the world’s first and only church building of its kind. This provides a clearly defined point of reference in the history of Nordsachsen, anchored in a building and a precisely documented occasion.

Buildings and history in Torgau

The Great Wendelstein is also part of Hartenfels Castle. This 28.2-metre-high stair tower is unique worldwide for its daring design and is considered an architectural masterpiece of the early Renaissance. Hartenfels Castle thus brings together two distinct themes: the history of the chapel’s consecration and the architectural artistry of the stair tower.

The Torgau Museum Trail offers a different focus. It presents historical figures, significant events and unique evidence from past centuries at authentic sites in the heart of Torgau’s old town. While the castle chapel and Wendelstein draw attention to specific buildings, the museum trail follows a broader historical thread through the old town. You can explore Torgau’s history through a building or through its people, events and historical evidence.

Landscapes and trails

Nordsachsen district is home to DĂĽbener Heide Nature Park, Dahlener Heide, Wermsdorf Forest and the unique floodplain landscapes along the Elbe and Mulde rivers. Its landscapes range from heathland and forests to river floodplains. Nordsachsen also has an extensive network of well-maintained, signposted hiking and cycling trails. Cycling, hiking and sailing are among the options for active leisure in the district.

The Obstland Route provides a specific distance: it is around 67 kilometres long, of which 21 kilometres run through Nordsachsen district. These are two different measures to bear in mind: the hiking and cycling network as general regional infrastructure, and the total length of this route compared with the section within the district.

Local history, museums and technology

The local history trail through Wermsdorf links important sites in the town’s history. It runs from the Old Hunting Lodge along Schlossstraße to Hubertusburg Palace. Unlike the Torgau Museum Trail, this route explicitly identifies its sequence through three stops. The difference between the two historical approaches is easy to grasp: here, a route through Wermsdorf; there, people, events and historical evidence at sites in Torgau’s old town.

In Bad DĂĽben, the DĂĽben Castle Landscape Museum has been housed within the castle walls since 1953. Its permanent exhibition comprises eleven newly designed rooms about the cultural landscape of DĂĽbener Heide, shaped by human activity. The theme links the name of the landscape with the question of how people have shaped it.

Bad Düben’s spa park has its own historical date: it was laid out in 1846 as one of Germany’s first public parks. The two dates refer to different things: 1846 is the year the park was laid out, while 1953 marks the beginning of the museum in the castle.

In Mügeln, the Geoportal at Mügeln Station – Kaolin Experience Centre presents the history of kaolin mining as a visitor and information centre. It uses photographs, original mining equipment, kaolin objects, display panels and terminals. At the “Railway” Experience Centre in Mügeln, visitors can experience railways in various forms—from the large-gauge railway in Oschatz to model railways. Mügeln therefore focuses on two different technological themes: the history of kaolin mining and railways in their various forms.

Another regional tradition awaits you in the mill region: guests are personally welcomed by the master miller with the traditional millers’ greeting “Glück zu” (“good luck”) and introduced to the secrets of traditional milling.

Leisure activities with different focuses

Oschatz is home to O-Schatz-Park, a free-entry family, wildlife and leisure park with animals, a maze, mini golf and a playground. As facilities may change, it is worth checking their current status before your visit.

In Nordsachsen’s lake district, formed from former open-cast mines, you can try water skiing. Along with hiking, cycling and sailing, this shows the range of active leisure options in the district—from trails and landscapes to water sports.
