Mügeln offers several specific themes for a stay: kaolin and mining, narrow-gauge railway history, historic sites in town and cycling routes through the fruit-growing landscape. The Geoportal Bahnhof Mügeln – Erlebniswelt Kaolin combines mining history with a visitor and information centre. There is also a local history museum, a signposted walking tour and various ways to explore the town and its surrounding countryside.

Kaolin and the narrow-gauge railway

At the Geoportal Bahnhof Mügeln – Erlebniswelt Kaolin, photographs, original mining equipment and kaolin objects tell the story of kaolin mining. Information panels and terminals complement the exhibition, which also includes interactive games for children. This allows visitors to explore the subject through both historic objects and explanatory, interactive features.

The narrow-gauge railway has its own place in local history: the Oschatz–Mügeln line opened on 7 January 1885. Mügeln was once Germany’s largest narrow-gauge railway station. The station complex includes an engine shed with three bays for nine locomotives. The train known as the Wilder Robert runs from Oschatz through the Döllnitz valley towards Glossen or Kemmlitz. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable and any possible service interruptions beforehand.

Discover historic sites on foot

The historic town walk marks squares and buildings with small information plaques that identify each site and provide details about its history. Its stops include St. Marien Church, a former pilgrimage church; St. Johannis Town Church is also part of the walk. St. John’s Church was built between 1232 and 1236. Since the plaques may not cover all sites, it is best to check the route before your visit.

Another landmark in the town’s history is the Altmarkt Fountain. The restored fountain features a statue of Heinrich von Mügeln. In August 2005, it was presented to the public in its redesigned form. This brings a more recent chapter of the town’s history into focus alongside its older church buildings.

Local history museum and regional heritage

The Mügeln local history museum covers archaeology, town history, industrial history, crafts and notable people from Mügeln. It originated from the private archaeological collection of saddler Richard Hummitzsch. Its holdings include historic guild documents, the oldest of which dates from 1506. The museum offers a broad view of different aspects of local history, while the Geoportal focuses specifically on kaolin mining.

Walks and events

A walk through the Mügeln Bankenzentrum offers unusual views across the town and its surrounding landscape. In Sornzig, the former Marienthal Monastery, built in 1241, is available for events. If you plan to attend or organise an event there, confirm availability in advance.

Cycling during the fruit blossom season

Two cycling routes around Mügeln offer different highlights. The Döllnitz cycle route connects towards the Elbe or Mulde cycle routes. The Obstland cycle route passes through the area’s orchards and is especially suited to the fruit blossom season. You can therefore choose between a route linked to the river cycle paths and one through the fruit-growing landscape, without treating their different highlights as the same.
