Delitzsch combines Baroque cultural history with a preserved fortification surrounding the historic old town. It also offers a zoo, green spaces and lakes to explore by bicycle. When planning your visit, you can choose between the castle and museum, walks around the town centre, and a visit to the zoo.
Baroque Castle and Museum History
Delitzsch Baroque Castle was once the residence of the widowed duchesses of the Saxon line of Saxe-Merseburg. Today, it is a cultural centre in northern Saxony. The Baroque Castle Delitzsch Museum brings together two perspectives on the 17th and 18th centuries: it shows both the lives of the widowed duchesses and the daily lives of the servants. The focus is therefore not solely on court life, but also on the routines of the people who served in the castle.
A free audio guide in the “Schlösserland erleben” app offers a multimedia tour of the Baroque castle. It includes anecdotes about Duchesses Christiane and Henriette Charlotte. If you would like to use the audio guide, check its availability in the app before your trip.
The Fortifications and Routes Around the Old Town
Delitzsch has a fortification complex dating from the early 15th century. It comprises a town wall, town towers, a zwinger, a moat and an earthwork rampart. The 1.4-kilometre-long town wall, with its water-filled moat and shady lime-tree promenade, encircles the historic town centre; the promenade is ideal for walks around the old town. The preserved structures show the various elements of the fortifications in one place: the wall and towers, the zwinger, and the moat and rampart.
The town wall offers a different experience for a walk than the castle museum: here, the focus is on the protected town centre and its fortifications, while the museum tells the story of the duchesses and the servants. You can choose your focus accordingly, without treating both subjects in the same way.
Zoo, Parks and Cycling Excursions
The four-hectare Delitzsch Zoo displays exotic animals in naturalistic enclosures. One of its special features is a walk-through aviary with budgerigars and zebra finches. The grounds are flat and barrier-free, and fully accessible to people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users. The animal collection and displays may change over time.
The town park, rose garden and nearby zoo offer opportunities for walks and relaxation. They complement the cultural and historical attractions with quieter places to spend time. If you would rather cover more ground, you can also explore the lakes around Delitzsch by bicycle. Walks around town and a cycling trip to the lakes are different ways to spend time outdoors.
Getting to the Baroque Castle
There are two train stations you can use to reach the Baroque castle: Unterer Bahnhof is on the Leipzig–Dessau/Wittenberg line, while Oberer Bahnhof is on the Halle–Eilenburg line. From either station, it is about a 15-minute walk to the castle. The routes are different, but the stated walking time to the castle is similar from both stations.
One possible rail route from Leipzig Central Station is to take S-Bahn line S2 to Delitzsch Unterer Bahnhof. From there, it is about a 15-minute walk through the town centre to the castle. Check train connections and the walking route before your trip. When choosing accommodation, you could first consider which side of Delitzsch matters most to you during your stay: the castle and museum, the historic old town, the zoo or time outdoors.
