Mockrehna offers a cycling loop with a clearly specified distance and a range of cultural and nature-related themes. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on a set cycling route or on individual attractions such as the mill, museums and forest nature trail. Each of the local offerings has its own focus, so you can choose according to your interests.
A circular tour with a clearly defined route
The 21-kilometre cycling loop starts and ends at Mockrehna railway station. It connects six stops and passes through fields, meadows, forests and small villages. This gives the route a clearly defined scope, while the landscapes change along the way. Separate cycle paths are not available everywhere. Bear this in mind when planning the tour for your stay.
The places in Audenhain also offer visitors a range of different highlights. Audenhain is characterised by the Schwarze Graben, with its 88 bridges, and is nicknamed “Little Venice of Saxony”. The Paltrock windmill offers a different highlight: it dates from 1751, is fully operational and includes a mill room and changing exhibitions. Visits are possible on German Mill Day or by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit the mill, bear this visiting condition in mind and arrange your visit in advance.
Mill history and local collections
The Audenhain local history museum is housed in a former school. It displays items from rural households as well as records from the former school and municipality. Everyday objects are presented alongside materials relating to local school and community history. In Mockrehna itself, a stone and an axe associated with a church legend can be seen in the church tower. The legend is thus linked to a specific place within the municipality.
Another collection is housed in the attic of the manor house in Wildenhain. The small museum displays household, craft, agricultural and school items. In comparison, the Audenhain local history museum focuses not only on rural household objects but also on records from the school and municipality. For both the local history museum and the museum in the manor house, it is advisable to check visiting options in advance.
Forest themes and wildlife
The four-kilometre forest nature trail in Gräfendorf covers forest conversion, pine heath, burial mounds and forest soil ecology. Its stations are designed for learning in nature. Its focus therefore differs from that of the 21-kilometre cycling loop: the loop highlights a longer route and changing landscapes, while the trail covers specific forest and nature topics.
Other local attractions include a private wildlife enclosure covering 110 hectares. Red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, reindeer, llamas, sheep and goats live there. The farm shop sells game sausage and game meat from organic production. If particular animal species or the farm shop’s products are important to your plans, check the current arrangements in advance.
Visits to the Paltrock Mill are possible on German Mill Day or by prior arrangement; you should also check visiting options for the museums with the respective venues.
