Taucha can be discovered from two very different perspectives: through architectural history and art on Castle Hill, and along trails beside the Parthe and across open countryside. There is also an observation tower and an art trail that draws attention to both the urban and rural landscape.
Manor House, Art Trail and Views
Taucha Manor House preserves a historic group of buildings around Castle Hill. This site gives the town a clear cultural focal point, while Beau View offers a different perspective. Completed in 2020, the art project uses large, freestanding steel frames that draw attention to views of Taucha’s urban and rural landscape. Art and surroundings are not treated as separate subjects: the frames direct attention to scenes in the landscape.
The Beau View Experience Trail runs through Seegeritz, Merkwitz, Dewitz and Sehlis. One frame stands beside the Großer Schöppenteich pond. The sequence of villages describes the trail’s route, while the steel frames form the project’s unifying design element. Visitors interested in culture will find a different way to explore here than at a single historic building: the art takes the landscape itself as its subject.
Taucha’s observation tower offers another perspective. It is 22 metres high, and visitors must climb 99 steps to see the surrounding area. Its height and number of steps make the climb a practical consideration when planning your day. This sets the tower apart both from the architectural history on Castle Hill and from the art trail, whose frames set the landscape in scene along the way.
Hiking and Cycling Along the Parthe
The Parthe hiking trail follows the river through green floodplains, across meadows and through woodland. You can observe nature along this route on foot or by bicycle. If you are particularly interested in riverside habitats, you can also visit the nature trail in Staditz Forest near Taucha. It follows the Pönitzer Bach stream through species-rich floodplain woodland and features information boards. You can therefore choose between a trail along the Parthe and an educational trail with information about the woodland as different ways to experience nature.
The Höhenweg Lübschütz branches off the Parthe hiking trail at the Parthenbrücke bridge on Wurzner Straße in Taucha. It is about 6.8 kilometres long and crosses open fields with expansive views across the Leipzig region. Its scenery differs markedly from the floodplains, meadows and woodland sections along the Parthe hiking trail: here, open spaces and distant views take centre stage. Its approximate length and open route give the Höhenweg its own character alongside the river and woodland landscapes.
A cycling route also passes through Taucha. It follows the Parthe from Borsdorf, passing through the town park, by the observation tower and through the town centre, then continues via Graßdorf and Seegeritz towards Leipzig. The route therefore takes in both landscapes and places. If you are planning to ride it, check the route conditions before setting out.
A Historical Trace in the Market Square
Taucha’s history also has a connection to regional food culture: Borna onions from the Borna area were a sought-after market product in Taucha. This historical trace of trade adds a look at what was in demand at the markets to the cultural and landscape themes. Together, Castle Hill, Beau View, the observation tower and the trails along the Parthe reveal different sides of the town without needing to be combined into a single sightseeing itinerary.
