Wermsdorf offers various ways to explore its history and landscapes: Hubertusburg Palace represents the area’s aristocratic past, while the Cultural Landscape Museum presents archaeological traces in the open air. There is also an educational trail through the town, a longer circular hike, and places with a geological or technical focus. When planning your visit, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus on historical sites, museum trails or a designated hiking route.

Castle History and Sites Around Town

Hubertusburg Palace is a royal hunting residence completed in 1752. The complex is considered one of Germany’s significant 18th-century palaces. Negotiations associated with the end of the Seven Years’ War took place there in 1763. Its architectural and political history therefore reflects two different points in time: its completion and the later negotiations. The palace courtyard has been restored with historic paving. You can book guided tours of Hubertusburg Palace through the Wermsdorf Tourist Information Office.

The local history educational trail links important sites in Wermsdorf’s history with information panels. It starts at the bridge by the Old Hunting Lodge, runs along Schlossstraße to Hubertusburg Palace, continues via Hirschplatz and ends at the riding hall. If you want to explore local history along a described route, the starting point, intermediate stops and destination provide clear guidance.

Archaeological Trails and Hiking Plans

The Cultural Landscape Museum is in the western part of Wermsdorf Forest, in the area around Kirchenteich, Drei-Teichen and Doktorteich. This open-air museum offers trails of approximately 2 to 10 kilometres through excavations, burial grounds and archaeological remains. The finds and remains illustrate 3,000 years of human settlement in the area. The trails offer a way to discover the museum’s archaeological themes in the landscape. Guided tours are available by arrangement; please arrange your visit in advance.

One longer hiking option is the 16.84-kilometre Wermsdorf–Collm route. It is classified as a moderate circular hike, making it longer than the museum trails, which are approximately 2 to 10 kilometres long. Regional buses 630 from Grimma, 801 from Oschatz and 804 from Mügeln serve Wermsdorf. As timetables may change, check your connection before travelling. The 18-metre-high Albertturm is accessible to hikers and day visitors, but may close seasonally due to weather conditions. Check access in advance if you plan to visit the tower.

Landscape, Geology and Technology

A quarry on the southwestern slope of Collmberg offers insight into the region’s geological development and is designated a geological natural monument. For a different perspective, visit the Kötitz Sculpture Park in Calbitz: it is part of the Wermsdorfer Forst landscape conservation area and features brick sculptures, ponds and viewpoints. Both places add geological or artistic impressions to the hiking and history themes.

The geophysical observatory on Collm has a small museum where you can see seismographs. Visits are available by arrangement; please schedule yours in advance. In Luppa, the restored post mill is a technical monument and museum. The local history association offers guided tours. Confirm availability before planning your visit around it.

Horstsee and Regional Cuisine

Horstsee covers approximately 70 hectares and lies directly on a watershed. The annual Horstsee fishing festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors. Dates and arrangements may change, so check the latest event information before travelling. Restaurants in the Wermsdorf municipality serve regional fish, goose and game dishes. This adds a culinary focus to the cultural and landscape themes; menus may change, so it is worth checking the current menu.
