Großtreben-Zwethau offers a variety of things to discover: Romanesque architecture in Dautzschen, a ring kiln in Großtreben, a bell tower in Zwethau, and landscapes featuring ponds, a park and a bird sanctuary. To plan your visit, it helps to choose a clear focus: Would you mainly like to explore churches and local history, or are walks and nature your priority? This way, you can tailor your time to your own interests.
Churches and local history
The village church in Dautzschen is a Romanesque hall church dating from the second half of the 12th century. Its architectural features include a west tower, nave, chancel and apse. The materials are also noteworthy: the tower and parts of the nave are made of bog iron ore, also known as brown ironstone. Sections of the nave, chancel and apse were built from bricks.
The Protestant parish church in Zwethau is a hall church with a detached tower. The bell tower belonging to the church is considered the oldest surviving historical witness in the municipality. Its walls probably date from the 11th century and may be even older. The tower was originally built as a defensive tower. Zwethau thus offers insights not only into the church’s architecture, but also into an early building history that can now only be dated with caution.
Another focus of local history is the ring kiln at the northern end of the Großtreben district. It is located right beside state road S 25, on the border with Saxony-Anhalt. Built in 1865, it is the world’s oldest ring kiln for firing bricks. In Zwethau, the history of the former castle also recalls a bygone estate: the castle stood in Zwethau Park and burned down completely in 1945.
Landscape, ponds and walks
Areas of Großtreben-Zwethau are part of the European bird sanctuary “Elbaue und Teichgebiete bei Torgau” (“Elbe floodplain and pond areas near Torgau”). In the wider region, the sanctuary includes a river landscape with oxbow lakes and remnants of floodplain forests. Three elongated ponds are a distinctive landscape feature in Zwethau. They mark the site of a former branch of the Elbe and now hold very little water. This brings two perspectives together: the region’s expansive river landscape and the clearly defined ponds in the district.
Zwethau Manor Park lies on the grounds of a former manor and is a pleasant place for a relaxing stroll. Trees and plants are labelled and explained. The park also has a playground, which is especially inviting for families to spend some time there. A walk here can therefore be combined with learning about the plants, while the playground offers families a dedicated place to visit.
