Torgau offers different starting points for planning your trip: the castle, churches and museum trail reveal the city’s cultural history, while the Great Pond lies outside Torgau and offers a focus on nature. Consider whether architecture and history or cycling and landscapes should shape your days—that way, you can tailor your stay to your interests.
Castle, church and city history
Hartenfels Castle is considered a completely preserved Renaissance castle and an impressive example of early German Renaissance architecture. Visits, exhibitions and special guided tours are among the ways to experience the castle. As visitor formats may change, check which options are available for your travel dates before your visit.
In the wider destination of Northern Saxony, the castle chapel at Hartenfels Castle in Torgau is a site of Reformation history: on 5 October 1544, Martin Luther consecrated it with a festive sermon. It is considered the world’s first and only church building personally consecrated by Luther, as well as a prototype of Protestant church architecture.
St. Mary’s Church also tells the story of Torgau’s architectural and artistic heritage. The late Gothic hall church houses the altar “The Fourteen Holy Helpers,” an early masterpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Visitors wishing to view historic art in its church setting will find a different experience here than in the castle’s exhibitions and buildings.
The Torgau Museum Trail is a walking tour. It connects the Electoral Chancellery and the City Museum, Hartenfels Castle and its lapidarium, the Katharina Luther Room, the Brewery Museum, the historic Craftsman’s House and the Mayor Ringenhain House. There, high-quality ceiling and wall paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved. Another site connected with the city’s history is the house where Katharina von Bora died, which contains a memorial dedicated to her—the only one of its kind in Germany.
The Great Pond and active days
The Great Pond lies outside Torgau and is a nature reserve as well as a European Special Protection Area for birds. More than 100 bird species breed there. Walks around the pond are a popular activity and offer a focus on nature that differs from the city’s churches and historic buildings.
Cycling is also a specific part of what Torgau offers, including the Elbe Cycle Route and shorter local routes. Cyclists can also make use of bicycle garages, luggage lockers, bike rental and bicycle shops.
Paddling and canoeing on the Elbe in the Torgau area are considered suitable for beginners. This offers another outdoor activity alongside cycling. If you are mainly interested in history, the castle, church and museum trail offer a different focus from days planned around exercise and landscapes.
Learning and discovering with children and teenagers
The Biberhof offers talks, excursions, hikes, project days and project weeks for children and teenagers. These different formats make it a distinct focus for learning and activities. If you include these options in your plans, you can consider them as an alternative or an addition to cultural sightseeing and activities around the Great Pond.
