Fields, meadows and vineyards in the northwest, wooded hills and sunny vineyard slopes in Stromberg, dense fir forests in the southwest: Enzkreis offers a striking variety of landscapes. Add to that hiking trails, nature parks and cultural sites that invite all kinds of discovery.

Landscapes with their own character

Enzkreis lies in the Northern Black Forest region in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. It surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. Within this geographic setting, the landscapes change markedly: the northwest is part of Kraichgau, where fields, meadows and vineyards dominate the scenery. In Stromberg, wooded hills meet gentle valleys and sunny vineyard slopes.

In Heckengäu, juniper heaths, blackthorn, and red and white hawthorn hedges cross the rugged landscape. In the southwest, the Northern Black Forest opens up, with dense fir forests, woodland meadows, broad plateaus and narrow valleys. If you would rather explore vineyard country, open uplands or forest areas on your trip, these contrasts offer a practical guide.

Two nature parks are also located in Enzkreis: Black Forest Central/North Nature Park and Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park. Both are intended to be developed and maintained as model recreational landscapes, with recreational interests balanced against the protection of nature and the landscape.

A castle, a fairy tale and mining history

Neuenbürg Castle houses a branch museum of the Baden State Museum. The museum tour begins in the north wing with an immersive theatrical adaptation of Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale “The Cold Heart.” For culture lovers, a castle visit here combines with a staged literary story.

The “Frischglück” mine in Neuenbürg offers a different historical focus: it is one of the Northern Black Forest’s old iron ore mines. If you plan a visit, check the current visiting arrangements beforehand.

Hiking among vineyards, forests and cultural trails

The signposted panoramic circular hiking trail in Freudenstein-Hohenklingen crosses the hills and passes through vineyards and forests around the village. The route thus showcases several of Enzkreis’s landscape features. A set of six hiking routes runs around Knittlingen, Sternenfels, Maulbronn, Ölbronn-Dürrn, Ötisheim, Mühlacker, Kieselbronn, Niefern, Neulingen, Königsbach-Stein and Eisingen. The routes vary in difficulty and are between 10 and 22 kilometres long. Check the latest route details before planning your hike.

You can also discover cultural history on foot. A section of the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail, a European Cultural Route recognised by the Council of Europe, passes through Enzkreis. The Eppinger Lines Trail is an art-and-history hiking trail featuring installations between Eppingen and Mühlacker. The two trails offer different experiences: one focuses on a European cultural route, while the other combines art and history along a hiking route.

Cycling routes and waterside activities

Several cycling routes pass through towns in Enzkreis and vary in overall length. The Stromberg-Murr Valley Cycle Route runs through Maulbronn along its 160-kilometre Karlsruhe–Maulbronn–Marbach–Gaildorf route. The 354-kilometre Württemberg Wine Cycle Route passes through Mühlacker and Maulbronn, among other places. The Enz Valley Cycle Route is 105 kilometres long and passes through Mühlacker on the Enzklösterle–Pforzheim–Mühlacker–Vaihingen–Walheim route. Straubenhardt and Neuenbürg, among other places, lie on the 260-kilometre Black Forest Central/North Nature Park Cycle Route. These distances refer to each entire route; check the latest route details and signage when planning your trip.

You can now go canoeing on the Enz, which flows through Enzkreis from east to west. Check local rules in advance, as they may change. At the Tiefer See natural swimming lake in Maulbronn, pedal boats and rowing boats are available seasonally for trips on the lake. Changing rooms, showers and toilets are also available there. If you plan to use the boats, check the latest operating information.

There are many ways to explore Enzkreis: through its contrasting landscapes, along hiking routes of varying lengths and difficulty, on cultural trails or on cycling routes that connect individual towns to longer journeys. The perspective you choose to focus on can give your trip its own direction.
