Ölbronn-Dürrn can be explored through two main themes: half-timbered houses and local history on the one hand, and trails around the Eichelberg on the other. Choosing between them gives your stay a clear focus without requiring a rigid itinerary. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to ask whether you mainly want to get to know the two districts and their history, or spend time on the trails.

Half-timbered houses and local history

Half-timbered houses are a shared feature of both districts: Ölbronn and Dürrn are known for their beautiful half-timbered houses. This highlights an architectural feature they have in common. In Ölbronn, the Ferdinand-von-Steinbeis House is also one of the sights. It complements the shared half-timbered theme with a sight associated with Ölbronn.

Dürrn’s history comes to life through two different periods. In front of Dürrn Town Hall, opposite the former fortified church, stands a replica of the Hercules Stone. It commemorates the Roman settlement of the local area. There are also burial mounds dating from the Celtic period in the Mühlau Forest in Dürrn. The Roman and Celtic periods therefore stand side by side as clearly distinct historical themes.

The Schanzgraben fortification on the Eichelberg is close to the viewing pavilion. This brings another local history theme into an area that is also important for hiking trails around the Eichelberg.

Hiking on the Eichelberg and towards Dürrn

Different types of trails can help you plan your hikes. A short route leads from Zigeunerwäldle through Eichelberg Forest and the Eichelberg vineyard up to the Eichelberg viewing pavilion. From the pavilion, various circular trails around the Eichelberg lead back to the Zigeunerwäldle hiking car park. This gives you a choice between a short walk to the pavilion and several loops around the Eichelberg. Check local conditions before setting out.

The circular route around Dürrn leads from Zigeunerwäldle along the shared cycle and footpath beside the district road to Dürrn. Its focus is on the route to Dürrn, rather than the Eichelberg trails. If you would like to include the district in your plans, this is a different route choice from the loop around the hill.

The Enzkreis as a regional setting

Within the broader travel destination of the Enzkreis, the Northern Black Forest region lies in the heart of Baden-Württemberg between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe; the district surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. This regional setting extends beyond the local destinations in Ölbronn-Dürrn. For planning your visit locally, the focus is on half-timbered houses, local history and the hiking options described here.

Plan around your travel interests

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to have a specific focus: would you like your stay to centre more on half-timbered houses and local history, or on hiking? If you plan to explore the trails, the short route to the viewing pavilion, the circular trails around the Eichelberg and the circular route to Dürrn each offer a different kind of walk. Plan the number and spread of your activities around the days you have available, and leave room for breaks.
