A 1.4-kilometer circular trail near Maulbronn Monastery leads over Klosterberg hill, bringing together wine-growing, orchard meadows and monastic history. The medieval monastery complex, museums and hiking trails together shape Maulbronn’s distinctive character: explore its culture and landscape from a range of different perspectives.

Monastery Complex and Monastery Town

Founded in 1147, Maulbronn Cistercian Monastery is considered the most complete and best-preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps. Its main buildings were constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries. The monastery church is predominantly built in the transitional style leading to Gothic architecture. The church’s long construction period and distinctive style give the complex an architectural framework, complemented by the preserved everyday buildings of the monastery town.

Maulbronn has preserved utility buildings dating from the time of the Cistercian monks: workshops, storehouses, houses, walls and towers. Half-timbered buildings dating from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century form a cohesive monastery town. The picture of the town thus includes not only the monastery buildings but also the surviving structures associated with economic and everyday life.

The Literature Museum in the monastery courtyard presents the permanent exhibition “Visiting. Learning. Writing. Maulbronn Monastery and Literature” in three sections. It portrays Maulbronn as an important place in literary history. At Schafhof, the “10 Maulbronn Heads” portraits commemorate famous Maulbronn seminary students from 1570 to 1950. Alongside architectural history, both places highlight literature and education.

Circular Trails and Cultural Landscape

The monastery complex is surrounded by an elaborate system of reservoirs, irrigation canals and drainage ditches. It extends through the river valley and the surrounding slopes and served to supply water, farm fish and irrigate agricultural land. The historic waterworks also reveal the connection between the monastery and the landscape.

Several nature reserves have emerged from the Cistercian cultural landscape. Circular trails around the monastery connect the natural environment of today with the history of the Cistercian order. If you prefer to choose from a range of routes, Maulbronn also has signposted hiking trails of varying lengths. They pass through landscapes of sunny meadows and shady forests, as well as viewpoints, lakes and barbecue areas.

The Maulbronn Wine Trail is a clearly defined 1.4-kilometer loop in the immediate vicinity of the monastery. Paved paths and meadow trails lead up Klosterberg hill, with views across Maulbronn along the way. Information boards cover wine-growing, orchard meadows and the lives of the Cistercian monks. Unlike the hiking trails of varying lengths, this circular route combines a set distance with a specific theme.

Maulbronn is also part of longer tours. The Northern Black Forest Monastery Route includes Maulbronn as one of its four monastery stops and offers a multi-day hike combining history and nature. The cycling section of the monastery route runs from Maulbronn Monastery via MĂĽhlacker and continues along the Enz and Nagold valleys to other monastery stops. The hiking and cycling routes therefore offer different ways to incorporate the monastery landscape into a longer tour.

The Maulbronn Monastery Concerts have been running for over 50 years and grew out of a Bach Week in 1968. They are among the major music festivals in Baden-WĂĽrttemberg. The monastery church is the main venue, particularly for choral concerts, oratorios, other sacred music and large orchestral concerts. Specific programs vary, so check the relevant program for details of a particular concert.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

During the day, Maulbronn can be reached by bus route 700 from Bretten or Mühlacker and by route 735 from Pforzheim. Buses run every 30 to 60 minutes. Check the latest timetable before traveling. The “Maulbronn-West” rail stop is outside the town in a small woodland settlement and is connected to Maulbronn by bus route 735. On Sundays from May to mid-October, as well as on various festival weekends outside the season, the Kloster Maulbronn leisure express runs between the stop and the town. Check the operating days in advance when planning to use this service.

To plan your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on the monastery town and its architectural and cultural sites or on exploring the surrounding cultural landscape. The set-length wine trail, hiking routes of varying lengths and multi-day monastery route offer different time commitments. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to your own interests without treating the different types of tours as equivalent.
