Wiernsheim combines the Heckengäu landscape with Waldensian history, forests and regional brewing culture. Wiernsheim lies in the Heckengäu on the plateau above the steep drop to the Enz Valley. The municipal forest covers 630 hectares, equivalent to 25 percent of the municipality’s area. Boundary or management changes may shift these figures. This gives visitors a choice of outdoor activities and cultural history destinations when planning their trip.
Forest and outdoor activities
Wiernsheim’s municipal forest is used for cycling, jogging, walking, horseback riding, hiking and relaxation. Those wishing to set off on foot can follow the traditional hiking trails, which start at designated hiking parking areas. Check local parking options before setting off.
Cycling route around the villages
The route around all the villages is a specific option for cyclists. The loop is around 19 kilometers long, moderately challenging and runs mostly on paved paths around Wiernsheim, Iptingen, Serres and Pinache. Its length, difficulty level and surface offer useful points of reference for planning your ride. Trail conditions and local changes may affect the details; check the route before setting off.
Churches and local history
In Iptingen, the cycling route highlights the old fortified church. St. Margaret’s Church is associated with a fortified complex dating back to around 1100; the church was added to its tower later. Pinache is a Waldensian village with Germany’s oldest stone Waldensian church, built in 1721. In Serres, the route reaches an old Waldensian church and Patoua Square, with its water feature. Even after several renovations, the Waldensian church in Serres has retained its original Waldensian character.
