St. Maria Magdalena is a focal point for art history in Tiefenbronn: its Gothic choir dates from around 1350, and the church has five Late Gothic winged altars. In addition, walking and cycling routes offer a range of themes and levels of difficulty.

Art History at St. Maria Magdalena

St. Maria Magdalena is a donation church and was first mentioned in the first half of the 12th century. The tall choir has a rib vault and valuable stained-glass windows: they were made in Strasbourg in 1370 and supplemented by Emil Wachter in 1976.

The five Late Gothic winged altars include the high altar by Hans Schüchlin, dating from 1469. It is one of the most significant winged altars in southwestern Germany. The large altarpiece is designed as a Marian and Passion altar and comprises wings painted on both sides, a predella and a superstructure. The Magdalene Altar by Lucas Moser is devoted to the pictorial themes of remorse, penance and conversion.

The church treasury also offers a distinctive art-historical highlight: its most precious item is a Gothic tower monstrance made in 1500 by the Augsburg artist Jörg Seld. If you would like to learn more about the church, you can book a guided tour in advance through the parish office or with Annemarie Gindele: 07234 4211.

Cycling Tours with Different Themes

The Chapel Trail is a signposted, moderately difficult cycling tour for ATB and MTB bikes. It runs from Tiefenbronn via Neuhausen to Hohenwart. Some chapels lie a little way off the route; if you would like to include them in your tour, take this into account when planning.

The longer, also moderately difficult Würm/Monbachtal cycling tour passes through the Hagenschieß forest, along the Würm and Nagold rivers, and through the Monbachtal valley. It returns to Tiefenbronn via Neuhausen. The tour is suitable for experienced families with cycling experience. In both its route and its target group, it therefore differs from the Chapel Trail.

The Höfetour is located in the immediate vicinity of the destination. This short, easy cycling tour is designed for the whole family and offers experiences at farms around Tiefenbronn. It is another option alongside the moderately difficult tours, although the routes have different characters.

Walking Trails and Historical Insights

The R 2000 hiking trail is a circular route that goes all the way around the Tiefenbronn district. The relatively short “Path of the Senses” runs from the sports ground to the cemetery in Tiefenbronn and was designed by Hede Leicht in 2017. Texts along the trail invite you to experience the surroundings with all your senses and to take a mindful look at the trees, shrubs and flowers.

If you are interested in local history, the historic town walk takes you through the Tiefenbronn district. Building plaques featuring historical images offer glimpses into the past and provide background information about the Gemmingen Castle and other buildings. The walk thus has a different focus from routes that emphasize cycling, chapels or mindful appreciation of the surroundings.
