Neuenbürg Castle and the Frischglück Mine offer two different historical perspectives during your stay: one features an immersive theatre experience exploring the region’s cultural history, while the other offers a glimpse into the history of iron ore mining. The Enz Valley Cycle Path also gives you a way to combine cycling with a visit to both places. As you plan, consider whether castle history, mining or outdoor activities should take centre stage—or whether you would like to combine these themes.
Neuenbürg Castle: Architectural History and Theatre
Neuenbürg Castle is a listed historic monument. Its present-day wings date from the Renaissance, while its history goes back to the Middle Ages. For a long time, the castle served the Dukes of Württemberg as a border bailiwick. Different periods of construction and use thus come together in one place.
The immersive theatre experience “Das kalte Herz” (“The Cold Heart”) offers insights into the region’s cultural history. While the castle grounds bring the building’s history into focus, the theatre emphasises regional culture. On the way to the castle along Schlosssteige, you will also pass the late-medieval St. George’s Church.
Mining History at the Frischglück Mine
The Frischglück Mine offers a different perspective on Neuenbürg’s history: iron ore mining in the Neuenbürg area dates back to Celtic times. The mine gives an authentic picture of mining techniques from past centuries. Its guided tour extends across three underground levels; one large stoping chamber is 60 metres wide and 30 metres high. The combination of a long mining history and first-hand insights into the mine makes a visit a distinctive alternative to the castle.
Explore by Bike or on Foot
The Enz Valley Cycle Path is signposted throughout and has no significant climbs. In Neuenbürg, you can temporarily leave the route to visit Neuenbürg Castle and the Frischglück Mine. This lets you combine cycling with two cultural and historical destinations. Check the local signposting before setting off.
Another route option is the jointly established Wilhelm-Ganzhorn Trail, which connects Neuenbürg with Straubenhardt. In Straubenhardt, you can follow it as a circular route or continue on to Neuenbürg. This gives you two options: a circular walk there or a route with Neuenbürg as your destination.
The Nearby Eyach Valley
The nearby Eyach Valley is also used for hiking and cycling. The Eyach flows into the Enz between Höfen and Neuenbürg. The Eyach Nature Reserve is well suited to exploring on foot. This adds another way to spend time outdoors alongside the cultural and mining themes, without suggesting that experiencing nature is the same as visiting the castle or mine.
Getting There and Planning
Neuenbürg is on the B294. You can reach Pforzheim railway station from Neuenbürg on the S6 in about 20 minutes; check the current timetable for your journey.
