In Mühlacker, cultural and historical walking routes meet tangible traces of local history. When planning your visit, it is worth looking at how the routes differ: the Eppingen Lines Trail connects Eppingen and Mühlacker over just over 40 kilometres, while several other routes explore individual historical themes locally. This means you can get to know Mühlacker not only through a single attraction, but also through the history of its paths and buildings.

The Eppingen Lines and their traces

The signposted Eppingen Lines Trail follows the defensive earthworks built in 1695 under Türkenlouis. Information boards accompany the route between Eppingen and Mühlacker. The Eppingen Lines themselves were built between 1695 and 1697 to defend against the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV. Their defensive trenches are still clearly visible in Mühlacker; the two so-called Fürstenberg redoubts near Mühlacker were also part of the first construction phase.

Reconstructions of wooden watchtowers, known as Chartaques, stand on the Sauberg in the Mühlacker district. Together with the surviving defensive trenches, they illustrate different aspects of the historical fortifications: the earthworks that are still visible, and the reconstructed towers. Anyone interested in the history of the defences can connect these details with the route of the Eppingen Lines Trail without reducing local history to a single stop.

Routes for different discoveries

A hiking trail of around 7.5 kilometres starts at Mühlacker station, follows the Enz valley, passes Löffelstelz Castle and joins the Swabian Alb Association’s HW 10 at Mühlhausen an der Enz.

In Mühlacker, the 56-kilometre Northern Black Forest Edge Trail runs past the Löffelstelz Castle ruins and through Dürrmenz to Niefern-Öschelbronn along the Eppingen Line, then continues to Karlsruhe-Durlach. It is on a different scale from the Löffelstelz Trail, which leads from the Kelter via Löffelstelz Castle to St Peter’s Cemetery. Sixteen information boards along the route provide information about local history. The route details help distinguish between a long-distance trail and a locally focused history trail.

Löffelstelz Castle and finds from its restoration

The medieval Löffelstelz ruins, also known as Dürrmenz Castle, date from the 13th century and were restored in 2005 and 2006. Concrete finds add to the story of the building at the Mühlacker Local History Museum: a permanent exhibition features building plans, cellars, stairs and pottery shards uncovered during the restoration of the ruins. The historic building, erected in 1596, now houses the city library, the local history museum and an event space. The castle’s architectural history and its archaeological finds are thus presented in different forms.

The former SWR medium-wave transmission mast is part of more recent technological history. Along with newer transmission masts, it is a cultural monument in private ownership. This makes it another part of Mühlacker’s history, distinct from the walking routes described here and the museum exhibits.

Leisure and a visit to the market

The Enzgärten area is a meeting place for residents and visitors, as well as a leisure and recreation facility of significance beyond the local area. It adds another dimension to the historical themes of a stay in Mühlacker. If you include cultural routes, local history and recreation in your plans, you will find a range of options without needing to combine them into a fixed route.

The Saturday market at Wertle is scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon; at least one regional food producer is represented there. If you plan to visit the market, check the date in advance. The routes and historic sites also provide a clear guide to a stay in Mühlacker: longer trails sit alongside locally focused walks and cultural history sites.
