Illingen lies on the southern edge of the Stromberg, on the outskirts of the Northern Black Forest region and within the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park. The monastery lakes are located between Illingen and SchĂĽtzingen. The landscape, outdoor activities and local history offer different focal points for planning a trip.
Hiking and Time Outdoors
Illingen has 36 kilometres of well-maintained hiking trails. The network includes hiking car parks and access points to the Swabian Alb Association’s long-distance trail network. This offers two scales to consider when planning: local trails and connections to the wider hiking network. You can choose your route accordingly, focusing either on local trails or on access to the long-distance network.
The monastery lakes are another outdoor highlight. The recreation area has a barbecue area and a forest playground. As a leisure activity in its own right, a visit here differs from a hike where the route itself is the main focus. The lakes are situated between Illingen and SchĂĽtzingen, making this area a distinct part of regional trip planning.
Climbing Forest and Cycling Routes
The Illingen Climbing Forest has nine courses and around 98 activities, with some sections reaching heights of up to ten metres. The megaziplines run over the monastery lakes and have a combined length of more than 350 metres. These figures describe different aspects of the facility: the courses, activities and height on the one hand, and the ziplines’ total length on the other. As the facility may change during renovations, check the operator’s latest information before visiting.
Cycling adds another option: numerous cycling routes pass through the municipality. If you don’t associate Illingen solely with hiking, you can include a second type of activity in your trip planning.
Town Centre and History
The town centre is home to the Posthof and the wine press building (Kelter) by the Protestant Church of St Cyriacus. The historic Illingen oil mill is recognised as a technical cultural monument; its original equipment from 1904 has been completely preserved. A church in Illingen is already mentioned in a deed of donation from 774. Together, these offer several historical points of interest: the town centre, preserved technical equipment and an early written reference to a church.
The Enzkreis District in Context
The wider destination of Enzkreis is in the Northern Black Forest region, in the heart of Baden-WĂĽrttemberg and between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe; the district surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. Enzkreis also has a varied landscape: its northwest belongs to the Kraichgau, where fields, meadows and vineyards shape the scenery. The Stromberg area of Enzkreis features wooded heights, gentle valleys and sunlit vineyards.
Another regional hiking highlight is the Eppinger Linien Trail. This trail, which combines art and history with installations, runs between Eppingen and Mühlacker, with one section passing through Enzkreis. It adds a distinct hiking destination to the regional picture without reducing the district’s diverse landscapes to a single excursion area.
