A medieval castle, historic artists’ homes and trails through varied natural landscapes give Skive Municipality its distinctive character as a place to explore. Culture and landscape are not separate here: at Spøttrup Sø, a circular trail and a birdwatching tower are just as much part of the nature experience as the insights into history that visitors can discover at the castle.
Castles, poets and living history
Spøttrup Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Denmark. The building was completed by the mid-1520s at the latest; Bishop Jørgen Friis finished it. Visitors can explore the castle, its moats, tower and Great Hall. Events, guided tours, markets and historical re-enactments take place throughout the year, offering different ways to experience the medieval building.
Spøttrup Sø reveals another side of the area: the lake is home to a rich variety of wildlife and birdlife, a trail runs around it, and the birdwatching tower offers a close-up experience of nature. The trails at Væksthus Spøttrup also bring together a range of discoveries. They cross the grounds and lead north to the castle, west to the lake and the former railway line, and east to Vestsallingstien. Group tours, as well as courses in cider-making and bread-baking, are also offered there.
Jenle is the historic artists’ home of poet Jeppe Aakjær, where he wrote some of his best-known works. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as two small cinemas about Jeppe and Nanna Aakjær. A poetry trail winds through the landscape, connecting nature with the poet’s words and stories. The grounds at Jenle, including Aakjær’s grave, are free to visit. The nature area is open to visitors year-round, except during the annual Jenlefest.
Museums offering different perspectives
Skive Art Museum combines changing perspectives with a look at its own collection: it opens two special exhibitions each year. The permanent exhibition “Samling om Natur” features works exclusively from the museum’s collection. Billedskolen offers activities for children and adults; the children’s and family exhibition “Kunstbyen” invites visitors to get creative and learn about colours and shapes.
In Glyngøre, the Kulturstation, housed in former railway station buildings, explores local history and the fjord’s influence on the people in and around the town. Topics include Glyngøre, the railway, fishing, industry and the cultural life that has shaped the area. Shellfish safaris are offered at the beach in summer. You can also buy a beach kit with equipment for catching crabs at the Kulturstation.
Træmuseet displays machines and tools made in Denmark and promotes an understanding of traditional woodworking. It is considered the only museum of its kind in the country. It complements the region’s art and local history with a hands-on perspective on objects, materials and work.
Nature trails and local apple culture
Skive Municipality has a total of 500 hectares of municipal forests and natural areas. Skive Plantage, south of Skive, covers 300 hectares within the municipality; in Krabbesholm Skov in Skive, you’ll find centuries-old oak trees. The Flyndersø and Sønder Lem Vig nature parks cover a combined 3,900 hectares of varied natural landscapes, with numerous marked walking trails. Facilities include parking, basic overnight accommodation, picnic areas and service buildings.
Pometet in Spøttrup is a centre for apple culture, with a large collection and gene bank of old Danish apple varieties. Its offerings range from pruning and grafting courses to cider workshops, apple-pressing days and a cider competition in autumn. Pometet is open to visitors year-round; volunteers are on site on Monday mornings to explain the facility or show visitors around.
The municipal hiking map is also a practical guide: it shows trails, parking areas, birdwatching towers and shelters. Shelters are located throughout the municipality, with most options in Salling. Five municipal shelters can be reserved in advance. The GoCollective train stops at Skive Station; the Midttrafik 2026/2027 timetable also lists route 420 between Skive, Breum, Selde, Branden and Fur. It’s worth checking the relevant timetable when planning your trip.
