Lihme lies in the western part of Skive Municipality and is surrounded by the Limfjord. The distinctive, protected Kås Peninsula extends into the fjord. Here, landscape and local history come together: walking routes lead through the Gyldendal, Vendal and Kås area, while Lihme Church and Stone Age burial mounds tell the story of settlement along the fjord. If you are looking for accommodation for a stay in Lihme, you can choose to focus on cultural history or walking.

Walking between the fjord and Kås

The Gyldendal–Vendal–Kås walking route is 8.4 kilometres long. It runs along the Limfjord, among other places, through protected nature and offers beautiful viewpoints from the tops of ancient burial mounds. Along this route, fjord scenery meets traces of the past. There are numerous Stone Age burial mounds in the area around Lihme, testifying to early settlements along the Limfjord.

The Gyldendal–Vendal Høj–Kås walking route is marked with red arrows. Lihme is also a starting point for walks on routes between Gyldendal, Vendal and Kås, as well as across the Kås Peninsula towards Ålbæk Beach. These destinations provide clear orientation in the walking area: the paths lead through protected nature, along the fjord or across the peninsula. This makes it easy to tailor the landscape focus of your stay to your interests.

Gyldendal Harbour: kayaking, beach and shelter

At Gyldendal Harbour, sea kayaks can be rented from the Gyldendal Kayak Club, north of the harbour. Check availability before you arrive. A child-friendly bathing beach is located south of the harbour. Boats can also call at the harbour day or night.

If you are considering an overnight stay in a shelter, Gyldendal Harbour has three shelters, each with room for five to six people. Advance booking is not possible; use is on a “first come, first served” basis. Check this policy before your trip. This means the shelters differ from accommodation whose availability is confirmed in advance: use here is governed by the stated policy.

Lihme Church and its history

Lihme Church is considered one of the oldest stone churches in Jutland and was built around the year 1100. It has undergone relatively few changes over time and today looks much as it did in the Middle Ages. The building includes a broad Romanesque west tower; its surviving lower section is made of granite blocks.

The shape of the church interior is also distinctive: it is longer and narrower than that of most Danish churches, which is considered an English feature. The baptismal font has five carved figurative relief motifs. One motif from the font served as the model for a motif on the Danish 500-kroner banknote. The building’s history, layout and reliefs offer different ways to explore the church.

Archaeology and natural history at the Lihme Collection

The Lihme Collection, an archaeological and natural history collection, is housed in Lihme Medborgerhus. It can be viewed both from inside and outside and is open to the public. Visits are possible by appointment, so plan your visit accordingly. The collection offers another way to explore the archaeological and natural history topics that also shape the area around Lihme.

Different interests can help guide your choice of a stay in Lihme: walking in the Kås area, spending time at the harbour, or exploring church history and archaeology.
