A marked 6.7-kilometre circular route passes the bird tower and Spøttrup Borg. In Spøttrup, the history of the castle and a protected lake area offer distinct highlights to experience firsthand.

Castle and Museum: Explore the History

Spøttrup Borg dates from around 1500 and shows what a real medieval castle looked like. Visitors can explore the castle, its moats, tower and great hall. At the Spøttrup Borg Museum, you can also learn how people lived, fought and worked at the castle over time. This draws attention not only to the architecture but also to the life behind the walls.

An exhibition in the reception building tells the story of the castle and the people behind it. Bishop Jørgen Friis, who completed the castle in the 1520s, is a particular focus. The castle's origins around 1500 and its completion in the 1520s thus provide two points of reference in its history. Spøttrup Borg also offers bookable guided tours covering local and national history. Dates, seasonal availability and booking arrangements may change, so check them in advance.

Spøttrup Sø: Circular Route and Protected Landscape

Spøttrup Sø is a protected natural area comprising the lake and the surrounding meadows and marshland. The marked circular route around the lake is 6.7 kilometres long and passes the bird tower and Spøttrup Borg. This lets you experience the landscape along a clearly defined route that also passes a cultural attraction. Parking is available on both the west and east sides of the lake.

Garden and Historical Traces

In the historic garden at Spøttrup Borg, you can discover medicinal and culinary herbs. The garden also includes an orchard and a picnic area with a rose pergola. The herbs and fruit trees offer a different perspective on the site than the castle walls and exhibition rooms; the picnic area adds a place to relax.

On the west side of Spøttrup Sø, the former pump house remains as a cultural heritage site, bird tower and exhibition venue. Its former function and its present status as a heritage site and exhibition venue connect different aspects of the history of the lake without equating them with the castle complex.

Væksthuset: Nature and Seasonal Learning

At Væksthuset Spøttrup, a covered viewpoint and bird tower stand at the boundary west of Søndermarken. From there, you can look out over the lake, enclosures for old Danish cattle breeds and the nature experiments in the meadow. Next to the picnic shelter, there is a play area with a playhouse and sandbox. As these facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.

During the growing season, visitors can learn about new and old varieties of grain, legumes, seeds and vegetables in the experimental plots. The learning opportunity is therefore limited to the growing season. Væksthuset also offers courses on making cider; course dates may change. Bookable guided tours about the site's history and hidden stories are also available. These tours must be booked, and availability may change. Check dates and booking arrangements in advance.
