Skive brings together art in a museum, a short route through the town centre and longer marked trails in forest areas. It also features archaeological traces in Krabbesholm Skov and Skive Plantage, as well as a park setting in an urban environment. The themes range from Danish art and historic features along the paths to traces of prehistoric landscapes. To find your bearings, it is worth considering these different highlights separately: each tells a different story about Skive.

Art at Skive Art Museum

The state-recognised Skive Art Museum is dedicated to Danish art from the 20th century to the present day. It has a particular focus on the expressive landscape tradition and Neorealism, including photography. The museum also has retrospective collections of artists with links to the Skive region. Its profile thus combines perspectives from art history with regional connections to artists, without limiting its focus to a single genre. Visitors can see two special exhibitions each year. This recurring programme complements the museum’s broad historical focus. If an exhibition is important for your travel dates, check the specific dates.

Historic path features and different routes

A municipal description from 2021 states that Toldstien is a 700-metre path through Skive city centre. It highlights coins from the time of Frederick IV, which are embedded in the path. The short route through the town centre thus combines a specific distance with a historic feature. By comparison, the three marked routes in Skive Plantage are 2.9, 4.5 and 7.0 kilometres long. Toldstien is the shortest of the routes mentioned here; the plantation offers several longer distances to choose from.

Forest paths and archaeological traces

Krabbesholm Skov is surrounded by the town of Skive and borders Skive Fjord directly along its eastern edge. Paths run throughout the forest, including sections with challenging inclines. These inclines are one specific factor to consider when deciding on a forest route. A very old Stone Age Køkkenmødding (shell midden) is also located in Krabbesholm Skov, adding an archaeological dimension to its landscape setting.

In Skive Plantage, you can choose from three marked routes of 2.9, 4.5 and 7.0 kilometres. The distances range from the shortest marked route to the longest, at 7.0 kilometres. In addition to its paths, the plantation has its own prehistoric character: it contains 16 burial mounds that may date back to the later Stone Age. Its prehistoric field systems are also among the best-preserved in Denmark.

Another place in an urban setting

Badesø Gymnasieparken also forms part of Skive’s urban attractions: it is located in a park in an urban setting associated with Skive Gymnasium. Along with the route through the town centre and the two forest areas, this location shows another side of Skive.
