Rønbjerg offers two distinct highlights for a getaway: trails between the plantation and the lake, and the art history of Rønbjerg Church. Rønbjerg Plantation is in Flyndersø - Sønder Lem Vig Nature Park. Nearby is Flyndersø, a large glacial lake between heathland and plantation. It can be reached on foot in a few minutes from Rønbjerg and Estvad. Both marked hiking trails head towards Flyndersø, giving your landscape itinerary a clear focus.
Hiking Trails Between Forest and Lake
The red “Rønbjerg - Flyndersø” hiking route runs from Rønbjerg via Stationsvejen and Præstevejen through the forest, then follows footpaths along Flyndersø. Wet conditions can affect the section by the lake. The yellow “Rønbjerg - Flyndersø” hiking route runs through forest and holloways to Flyndersø; on the return, it follows the lakeshore for about a kilometre and a half back to Rønbjerg.
The two trails therefore differ in their routes: the red route includes Stationsvejen and Præstevejen, as well as footpaths by the lake. The yellow route follows holloways to the lake and has a lakeside section of about a kilometre and a half on the return. When choosing between the two, you can take these specific route features into account without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.
A Public Shelter Site in the Plantation
There is a public shelter site in Rønbjerg Plantation at Gl. Rønbjerg. It can be reached from Præstevejen by car, on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The site includes a shelter, picnic benches, a shelter with a fire pit, a grazing field for horses, a hitching rail for horses and a dry toilet. These facilities offer practical guidance when planning a break; the grazing field and hitching rail are relevant for visitors with horses. As facilities and access arrangements may change, check these details before your visit.
Church Art and Landscape History
Rønbjerg Church stands west of Rønbjerg on an isolated ridge of moraine, surrounded on all sides by a sandur plain. Inside the church is an almost ten-metre-long painted frieze dating from 1522, with seven scenes from the Passion of Jesus: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Kiss of Judas, Jesus brought before Pilate, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross and the Crucifixion. The north wall of the nave also features late Gothic murals, painted around 1500–1525 by the Ejsing workshop.
Near Rønbjerg, on Rønbjerg Heath, there is a well-preserved ring enclosure that was probably used as a pen for cattle or sheep. The highest point of Rønbjerg Heath offers views over Flyndersø and Hjelm Heath. Near the lake is Flyndersø Mill, a reminder of the former use of natural forces. These landscape and cultural features complement the hiking trails with insights into the area and its history.
