Plan your trip to Nissum around two distinct interests: walking routes and birdwatching in the area, or historical traces of churches, castles and mills. Grynderup Sø is the focus for nature; Åsted brings together several historical connections. The landscape and local history therefore each offer their own specific points of interest for your stay.

Hiking and Birdwatching

The hiking route at Grynderup Sø is marked with yellow arrows in the area around Nissum. South of the lake, a hiking route is 13.4 kilometres long. The markings and distance provide different planning information: yellow arrows indicate the route at Grynderup Sø, while the kilometre figure gives you an idea of the length of the southern route. You can therefore plan your walk based on either the route markings or a specific stated distance.

There are two connected bird towers in the southern part of Grynderup Sø and a birdwatching shelter in the northern part. If birdwatching is important to your stay, the named towers and shelter offer a focus in their own right. In the area around Nissum, a constructed path along a river embankment also offers another way to experience nature on foot.

Churches, Castles and Mills

Åsted Kirke, which is associated with Nissum, stands on the edge of the raised “Stone Age sea”, now known as Hinnerup Ådal. The low-lying granite church has a Romanesque chancel and nave and was built around 1200 from granite ashlars. The chancel is the altar area, while the nave is the main space of the church; granite ashlars are worked, block-shaped stones. The building can therefore be understood in terms of its style, layout and materials.

The medieval castle site of Sallingholm is located near Åsted, in the area around Nissum. Work was carried out on it in 1372 and again around 1400; the two dates mark construction in two phases. A record from 1408 states who owned Nissum Castle at the time: it belonged to Niels Mikkelsen Krabbe. Apparently, Glob Krabbe had Nissum demolished and built Østergård instead, two kilometres further to the southeast. Østergård was built between 1516 and 1550 in the Late Gothic style.

In chronological order, the construction work at Sallingholm took place in 1372 and around 1400, the ownership of Nissum Castle was recorded in 1408, and Østergård was built between 1516 and 1550. The information can thus be seen as distinct stages in local history: construction phases, ownership and the later construction of an estate.

The history of the mills also follows a chronological and geographical sequence. Nissum Mill stood on the Hinnerup Å. After the Nissum watermill was decommissioned, a new mill was built at the bridge in Åsted in 1795 to replace it. The history of the mills adds another concrete change: the decommissioning of the watermill led to the construction of a new mill at the bridge in Åsted in a specific year.
