In Selde, art in the landscape meets the area’s older church history. The Selde Lake and Art Route leads to the Sculpture Village of Selde, while Selde Church preserves traces of Romanesque architecture and a more recent artistic redesign. The painter Emilie Demant Hatt, who was born in Selde, is also part of the area’s cultural history.

Discover the Art Trail and Landscape

The Selde Lake and Art Route is 3.7 kilometres long and marked with red signs. It leads from the lake to the Sculpture Village of Selde and past numerous distinctive and thought-provoking works of art. Art accompanies you along the route rather than appearing only at a single destination. The red markers help you find your way along the route, and a car park is provided for walkers.

At Rimmervej, the trail passes a birdwatching tower. From there, you can look out over the Natura 2000 area around Selde Vig, Fursund and Fur. The artworks along the trail and the view from the tower offer two different focal points on the same route: one is about artworks, the other about taking in the landscape.

The approximately 1.5-kilometre guided tour through the Sculpture Village of Selde is different from the signposted 3.7-kilometre route. It is scheduled for Tuesday mornings during the summer holidays and starts at Da Winti; stories about individual artworks are told along the way. The shorter route is therefore not simply a different distance for the art trail, but a separate format featuring stories and background information. Check in advance whether the tour is running on your planned visit date.

Church History and Art in Selde

Selde Church is the northernmost church in Salling and was built predominantly in the Romanesque period. During its modernisation in 2007, local artist Erik Heide created a new altar area. The church thus reveals two distinct historical periods: its predominantly Romanesque architectural history and the artistic redesign of the altar area in the 21st century.

One specific detail of the church’s furnishings is one of the baptismal fonts: its runic inscription includes the name Gudliv. If you would like to see inside Selde Church, check the opening hours before your visit.

More recent cultural history also includes Emilie Demant Hatt (1873–1958), an Expressionist painter born in Selde. Her biography adds a person connected to the area to its architectural and church history.

Since 2013, art exhibitions featuring well-known artists from across the country have been held in Selde every year. If you would like to combine your visit with an exhibition, check the dates for your travel period. The exhibitions provide a recurring highlight alongside the artworks in the Sculpture Village and the enduring traces in the church.
