An open-air museum with origins dating back to 1895, a dune whose sand is still visibly shifting, and well-preserved medieval town walls: Nymburk District offers very different ways to experience culture and landscape. The region cannot therefore be reduced to a single focus for a visit. From folk architecture and archaeology to protected habitats and technical heritage sites, you will find subjects that each offer a different perspective on the area.
Folk Architecture and History
Polabské národopisné muzeum Přerov nad Labem is one of Europe’s oldest regional open-air museums; its origins date back to 1895. The collection comprises almost 40 examples of folk architecture, including nine farmhouses, seven granaries and four barns. The furnished interiors of the farmhouses show village life in the Polabí region from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. The focus is therefore not just on individual buildings: the exhibition connects architectural styles with the everyday life that unfolded in their rooms over a long period.
Vlastivědné muzeum Nymburk explores the natural environment of the Polabí region, prehistoric archaeology and the history of Nymburk. In Poděbrady, Památník krále Jiřího z Poděbrad occupies the oldest part of the medieval castle. Gothic wall paintings and hundreds of exhibits bring the 14th and 15th centuries to life. The two museums take different approaches: one explores nature and archaeology, while the other presents a historical period within a castle complex.
The Slavníkovci site in Libice nad Cidlinou is also a national cultural monument. Slavník had the fortified site built with a mint, a stone church and a prince’s palace. Nymburk preserves well-kept medieval town walls, and the tower of St. Giles Church offers views. The crematorium in Nymburk and the hydroelectric power station in Poděbrady are also national cultural monuments. If you plan to visit the church tower, it is best to check the latest access information in advance.
Floodplains, Moorland and Shifting Sand
The natural environment, too, cannot be summed up in a single type of landscape. Libický luh lies in the flat Elbe floodplain southeast of the confluence of the Elbe and Cidlina rivers. The Hrabanovská černava National Nature Monument protects a Polabí moor with wetland and meadow communities, as well as rare species. At Písečný přesyp u Píst, open continental dune grasslands are protected; it is also one of the few places in Czechia where the substrate is still visibly shifting. Together, these areas offer three clearly distinct natural settings: a river floodplain, a moor and shifting dune sand.
Crafts, Animals and Labyrinths
ZOO Chleby is home to more than 180 animal species. Visitors can buy food and feed selected species. The zoo can be reached from Nymburk by bus line 673, which connects with regional and express trains from Prague and regional trains from Kolín. Check the latest timetable and connections for your journey.
At Botanicus, you can try your hand at crafts and learn more about their history; the programme may vary by season. The dining hall serves dishes made in part from produce grown in the organic gardens. Loučeň Castle is open year-round. Its Labyrintharium comprises twelve mazes and labyrinths; it is worth checking the latest visitor information before your visit. Each of these experiences has a different focus: getting hands-on, watching animals or exploring a labyrintharium.
Pivovar Nymburk brews eight pale beers, as well as a semi-dark specialty beer, a dark lager and a chocolate-flavoured dark lager. The selection may change. Nymburk also lies on the Elbe Cycle Route, which connects Czechia with Germany. If you plan to follow the route on your trip, check its current course and conditions in advance. Alongside the museums and protected landscapes, this glimpse of the region shows just how varied its cultural and natural attractions are.
