Křečkov lies approximately three kilometres north of Poděbrady in the flat Polabí region. Local themes range from the history of a medieval watercourse to memorial sites in the village centre. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between the history of water management, the chapel and memorial, and the seasonal use of a multipurpose reservoir as different focal points. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider whether cultural history, the landscape or a seasonal activity matters more to you.
The Sánský Canal and its history
The Sánský Canal runs through Křečkov and flows into the Mrlina at Budiměřice. Its history dates back to the mid-15th century: around 1450, Jiří z Kunštátu had a watercourse built to carry water from the Cidlina to the ponds near Poděbrady. The pond Blato, located northeast of Poděbrady, was also supplied; it was one of the largest ponds in Bohemia. The watercourse was initially called Lánská struha, and later Sánská strouha or Sánský kanál. The canal, which has survived to this day, is 16 km long. Křečkov’s local history thus connects a specific watercourse with a broader system of water management that included the Cidlina, Poděbrady and Blato.
The chapel and places of remembrance
The historic chapel of Křečkov stands in the village square. It was extensively reconstructed in 2001 and is one of the village’s cultural monuments. In the past, it was occasionally used for religious purposes; its bell was also rung when someone died. At the chapel, the building’s renovation in 2001 and its earlier religious functions come together as distinct layers of time.
Local remembrance also includes the so-called Umíráček (death bell). It was rung in Křečkov until 1982; after that, its tolling was played over a record on the local loudspeaker system. The shift from ringing the bell to playing a recording marks a change in local practice. The centre is also home to the memorial to the fallen, set among lime trees. Alongside the chapel and the history of the bell, it is a separate expression of public remembrance.
The Polabí region and seasonal travel planning
The flat Polabí region provides the landscape setting for the village; the region has numerous cycle routes. It is worth distinguishing between local and regional scales when planning: the canal, chapel and memorial are specific to Křečkov, while cycle routes shape the wider landscape of the Polabí region. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether to focus on the village’s history or the cycle routes of the Polabí region.
A multipurpose water reservoir in Křečkov is used for swimming in summer and ice skating in winter. These activities mark two different seasons and give you a concrete reference point when choosing when to travel. Summer and winter therefore mean different uses here, not two activities available all year round. If you are planning your stay specifically around the reservoir, check its current availability in advance.
