Libice Nad Cidlinou can be explored through two distinct themes: the history of the Slavník Hradiště and the floodplain landscape at the confluence of the Elbe and Cidlina rivers. The town also has churches with their own architectural and local histories. When choosing your destination, consider whether you are primarily interested in archaeological history, sacred architecture or river landscapes. The railway line that runs through the town and an educational trail also offer practical starting points for planning your trip.

The Hradiště: Early History and Archaeological Traces

The Slavník Hradiště was established at the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries. In the second half of the 10th century, it became the center of a principality ruled by the Slavníkovci. The Hradiště included a mint, a stone church and a prince’s palace. Today, the archaeological site displays the foundations of a church, a palace and a gate tower; information panels cover the history of Libice. The acropolis of the Hradiště is designated a national cultural monument. This offers two distinct ways to consider the site’s historical significance and the architectural traces presented today as a window onto the past.

Another way to put the history in chronological context is the Pamětní síň slavníkovské Libice. Its presentation spans the beginnings of Slavic settlement in the 6th century to the fall of the Hradiště in the 12th century. It also covers the medieval and modern history of Libice Nad Cidlinou. The Památník pod hradištěm has a different focus: several mosaic panels show selected finds and summarize the history of the Hradiště in several languages.

Churches and Memorial Sites

The Evangelical Church has a clearly dated construction history and a function that continues to this day. It was completed at the end of 1895 and ceremonially opened in May 1896. A Neo-Renaissance church, it still serves its original purpose and is one of the town’s defining landmarks. Those interested in architectural history will find here a different historical and architectural point of reference than at the early medieval Hradiště.

The grounds of St. Adalbert’s Church lie on the southern edge of the town. The walled cemetery includes a Renaissance entrance tower. In the town center, the Jan Hus monument on the village square in front of the municipal office also commemorates Jan Hus. These sites offer different points of interest: the cemetery’s architectural style, the Evangelical Church, which remains in use, and a monument associated with a historical figure.

Libický luh and Its River Landscape

Libický luh lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Cidlina rivers between Libice Nad Cidlinou and Velký Osek and is designated a national nature reserve. Protected areas include floodplain forests, floodplain meadows and wetlands, as well as habitats for rare and endangered plant and animal species. Characteristic landscape features include old channels of the Elbe, oxbow lakes and meadows formed through silting. Kingfishers are also found around the Bačovka and the oxbow lakes. Alongside the history of the Hradiště, waterways and forest and meadow habitats thus offer distinct themes to explore on your trip.

Educational Trail, Cycling Route and Getting There

The Naučná stezka Libice educational trail runs from the confluence of the Labe and Cidlina rivers via the Hradiště and Libice Nad Cidlinou to the road bridge over the Cidlina. One of the stops focuses on the flora and fauna of the floodplain forest. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The CKH12 “Za Slavníkovci” cycling route also leads to Libice Nad Cidlinou; most of it is flat and runs through floodplain forests along the Labe. Surfaces and conditions on this route can also change, so take that into account when planning.

The Kolín–Prague railway line is a practical factor when planning your journey: it runs through Libice Nad Cidlinou. No timetables or specific service details are provided here, so check the connection for your travel dates. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether archaeology, architectural history or the river landscape is your main interest, then plan the visits and routes that suit you.
