Vykáň can be understood through several historical layers and its distinctive landscape. Archaeological finds date back to Celtic times; the architectural history of St. Havel’s Church traces a path from an older Gothic building to the Baroque period. The gate of farmstead No. 29 points to rural architecture from before the Battle of White Mountain. At the same time, the village lies in the open Polabská nížina, characterised by extensive areas of farmland. When planning a stay, you can therefore decide whether architectural history, older history or the rural landscape should be the main focus.

Church, bell tower and monuments

St. Havel’s Church in Vykáň is a single-nave Baroque building dating from 1733–1734. It was created by remodelling an older Gothic church. The dates describe the Baroque building, while its predecessor marks an earlier phase in the history of the church site. “Single-nave” names the basic form of the building and adds an architectural detail to the chronology.

The St. Havel’s Church complex includes the mortuary, bell tower and surrounding wall. The entire complex has been listed in the Czech Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments since 1958. The listing therefore covers several elements, not just the church building. The statue of St. Donatus is also listed as an immovable cultural monument.

The bell tower in Vykáň is a single-storey, prism-shaped Baroque building dating from 1769. It houses two bells from 1947 and 1948. They are rung regularly at midday on Sundays. If you would like to hear them, check the schedule in advance.

Older traces and rural architecture

Archaeological finds attest to human presence in the Vykáň area from the Late Stone Age through to Celtic times. This period extends far back beyond the dated church buildings, broadening the view of the area’s history beyond its surviving architecture.

Vykáň developed at a historic crossroads of trade routes between Český Brod, Čelákovice and Brandýs nad Labem. This origin links the village’s history to a regional network of routes and offers a different historical perspective from that of the individual monuments.

The gate of farmstead No. 29, which is privately owned, is considered a particularly valuable remnant of pre-White Mountain rural architecture and is one of the oldest surviving architectural elements in Vykáň. In contrast to the Baroque church, it points to an earlier phase of rural construction.

Open landscapes and practical information

Vykáň lies in the open landscape of the Polabská nížina, characterised by extensive areas of farmland. This rural character offers a distinct focus alongside the architectural and local history. When choosing a place to stay, you can decide whether the historic buildings and traces of the past or the agricultural landscape are more important to your trip.

One practical detail for planning is the municipal library: it is located in the municipal office building and is open every Thursday from 15:00 to 18:00. If you are planning to visit the library, check the opening hours in advance; they may change.
