Sloveč’s history can be seen in specific places: St. Martin’s Church stands at the center of the historic village green; monuments and religious traditions reveal other facets of the village. If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Sloveč, you can plan your trip around your interest in architecture, commemorative heritage or local festivals. When planning, consider both the historical connections and the dates and programmes of the events.
The Church and the Historic Village Centre
The Neo-Romanesque St. Martin’s Church dates from 1886 and stands at the center of the historic village green. In front of the church is a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. It is a work by Kofránek of Vojice, dating from 1875. The two dates make the chronology easy to follow: the statue was created eleven years before the church was built. Two clearly distinct records of the village’s history thus stand in this square.
You will find other memorials with their own dates of origin at other locations, too. A stone cross in Sloveč is a stonework by Karel Kofránek from 1857. The statue of the Crucified Christ near the former school was also created in 1857, by F. Stýbla. Despite sharing the same year, these are two different works. There is also a monument to land reform from the First Republic period on the road to Městec Králové.
The monument to the fallen of the First World War stands next to the school. It was unveiled in 1921 and bears a commemorative plaque to local legionnaires. Together with the older works, it forms a chronological sequence: from the stone cross and the statue of the Crucified Christ, through the statue of the Virgin Mary and the church, to the 1921 monument. This chronology helps distinguish the different forms of commemoration without grouping them into a single ensemble.
Pilgrimages and Local Festivals
Sloveč’s religious calendar includes a pilgrimage on the Feast of Corpus Christi, a Marian pilgrimage on September 12 and the feast of St. Martin’s Church on November 11. The three dates have different emphases, but all are useful reference points if you would like to plan your visit around a local tradition. Check the dates and current programme before travelling, especially if the celebration itself is the reason for your stay.
The traditional Jiřinkové dny are another occasion to visit. The 26th edition in 2026 includes a free visit to a planting of 1,500 plants in more than 300 varieties. This garden-related attraction complements the village’s religious traditions and historical landmarks. Programme details may change from year to year, so if you are planning your trip specifically around the event, it is advisable to check the programme for that year’s edition.
Stream, Bus and Route Planning
The landscape, too, is shaped by specific local connections: a stream rises in the forest, flows through Sloveč and feeds the local ponds. This waterway offers a different facet of the village from its architectural and commemorative heritage. When deciding on your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are most interested in the churches and monuments, the festival dates or the local landscape.
Sloveč is served regularly by buses running towards Městec Králové and Nový Bydžov. Check the current timetable for your travel date. The 2022 municipal land-use plan does not show a tourist route or cycle route through Sloveč. Routes may change later, so check current local route information if a particular route is important to your plans.
