Waterbirds, including swans, nest in the reed-lined meander of Jakubský rybník; a blue-marked hiking route leads from there to the settlement of Poušť. This combination of pond landscape, path and small settlement gives Záhornice a distinctive natural attraction. There are also walks through fields and deciduous woodland, as well as archaeological and church history sites. You can choose different focuses depending on whether you are particularly interested in the landscape, walking routes or local history.

Ponds, a stream and a protected landscape

Záhornice lies in a valley on the banks of the Záhornický potok. The settlement of Poušť is also shaped by its waterside location: it lies on the shore of Jakubský rybník and is surrounded by forests. Waterbirds, including swans, nest in the pond’s reed-lined meander. There is also a forest spring near Jakubský rybník, separated from the pond by a small railway bridge.

Another pond is at the heart of other nature destinations: a nature trail circles Pustý rybník and continues along the blue-marked route to Komárovský rybník. From a clearing, you can see the entire area of Pustý rybník, from dam to dam. The Dymokursko Site of Community Importance, a European protected area, is also important to the municipality’s natural heritage; it includes the cadastral area of Záhornice u Městce Králové.

Routes through ponds and forests

The walking routes described here differ in their surroundings. One starts on a field track between houses in the Závodeň district and leads through fields to dense deciduous woodland. You may encounter hares, roe deer and common buzzards there. Another walk follows an avenue of old lime trees, designated a state natural monument.

The area’s history can also be traced on a route: an unmarked path follows the former track of the sugar factory railway to an archaeological site on Vondrák. Check the trail conditions locally; you should also check the signage and trail conditions on the blue-marked routes.

Archaeological traces and local history

An archaeological fortification site is located on Vondrův kopec; the Záhorská fortress once stood there. It is a separate historical point of interest from the archaeological site on Vondrák. Záhornice is also home to the branch church of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist.

Local history also includes an earlier market tradition: in the 18th century, widely known flax markets were held here on Candlemas and St Martin’s Day. These historic markets should be distinguished from today’s events. The local association holds an annual bluegrass festival. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the current event dates. Záhornice also has a Natura 2000 education centre; check visiting arrangements before you go.
