The archaeological site lies about 500 meters south to southwest of the built-up area. Archaeological finds and published research document settlement in the Starý Vestec area since the Early Bronze Age (2300–2000 BC). Late La Tène and early Roman-period settlements, along with remains of the Únětice and Knovíz cultures, add evidence from other periods. The history of the place thus extends from early phases of settlement to later relationships recorded in writing.

Local History and Places of Remembrance

The first written record dates from 1320; at that time, Starý Vestec belonged to Břevnov Monastery. From 1437, the village belonged to neighboring Přerov nad Labem. The early archaeological periods lie thousands of years before these medieval affiliations and offer a different perspective on the village’s history.

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas is considered Starý Vestec’s most important cultural monument. It was built in 1861 in honor of the patron saint of the Czech lands. After falling into severe disrepair, it was restored to its present form in 1993 at the municipality’s expense—without its original bell tower—and reconsecrated. The monument to those who fell in the First World War (1914–1918) was completely renovated in 1990. The chapel and monument represent different forms of remembrance: dedication to St. Wenceslas and commemoration of those who fell in the war.

Břístevská hůra: Walking Trail and Landscape

Břístevská hůra lies in the vicinity of Starý Vestec, between Prásce Forest and the village. It can be reached from Starý Vestec via a yellow-marked hiking trail. On the western and southern slopes, heat-loving steppe plant communities have survived among old fruit trees despite neglected maintenance. “Heat-loving” describes plants that prefer warm locations; the term helps explain what makes this vegetation distinctive.

The ruins of the Baroque Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, dating from the first quarter of the 18th century, stand on Břístevská hůra. A viewpoint offers sweeping views across the Polabí region. Vegetation and local maintenance can affect visibility; if the view is important to you, take these changing conditions into account when setting your expectations. The route “Bříství–Břístevská hůra–Svatý Václav–Starý Vestec” is designated as a hiking trail. Visitors mainly interested in early settlement and local history will find the historical focus in Starý Vestec’s archaeological traces and places of remembrance. The hill offers a different emphasis: its landscape is shaped by the hiking trail, slope vegetation, chapel ruins, and viewpoint.
