Water Sports and Lakeside Activities

At the Neusiedl am See lido, you can enjoy the lake in a variety of ways: stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, surfing, wingfoiling and kitesurfing are all possible. A sailing and surfing school offers support and courses; availability may vary seasonally. If you are particularly interested in sailing or surfing, you can take course availability for your season into account when planning your trip.

The lido also has an interactive water-spray park, a water-and-mud play area, a children’s pool with a slide and large play lawns. So, in addition to activities on the water, there are a range of play and water facilities on land. These options give the place a broader character than a purely water-sports destination.

The Federal Performance Center in Neusiedl am See offers another sporting dimension: It provides training conditions for world champions and Olympic champions, too. This means the town offers both recreational sports at the lido and training opportunities for elite athletes.

Harbors and the Cycling Route Around the Lake

The harbor complex in Neusiedl am See comprises an east and a west harbor. The east harbor has 90 boat berths, while the west harbor has 250. These figures give a sense of the different sizes of the two areas. As berth numbers can change over time, it is advisable to check the latest information when planning a specific visit.

The B10 cycle route around Lake Neusiedl is 135 kilometers long; 38 kilometers of it run through Hungary. The Hungarian section is therefore included in the total distance. While the harbor complex is divided into east and west harbors, the B10 describes a route around the lake. Route details may be updated, so check the latest information before planning a ride.

History and Monuments

The Tabor Ruins connect several historical periods: They date back to the Middle Ages, and their masonry points to the 14th or 15th century. During the Kuruc wars, the complex served as a refuge fortress. Its towering walls offer views over the town and the lake. The Calvary Hill is designated a natural monument, adding a distinct protected status to the area’s historic sights.

The Plague Column, also known as the Holy Trinity Cross, stands in the main square. It was erected in 1713, after the last major year of the plague. The Serb Memorial, also called the Soldiers’ Memorial, commemorates history in a different way: The five-meter-high concrete obelisk is topped by a concrete bird, the “Turul,” and serves as a memorial and reminder of events from the First World War. The Holocaust Memorial in the church park was inaugurated in June 2021.

Beyond individual buildings, the cultural landscape of the Lake Neusiedl area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. In Neusiedl am See, you can encounter both specific monuments with their respective historical connections and a cultural heritage associated with the landscape of Lake Neusiedl.

Experience Nature, Wine and Culture

Neusiedler See–Seewinkel National Park protects a border region with enormous biodiversity and is Austria’s only steppe national park. Birdwatching, canoeing, solar-powered boat tours and cycling trips are among the ways to experience the national park. The district of Neusiedl am See is home to the state’s most popular tourist destinations, Podersdorf and Illmitz, within the cross-border national park.

The events calendar also features a recurring seasonal highlight: Martiniloben takes place every year around November 11. During the event, winemakers open their cellars for two days and offer tastings of the new wine. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the event dates for the relevant year. Haus im Puls adds to the cultural offerings with around 50 events a year, presented by the private cultural association IMPULSE.
