Weiden am See offers several distinct reasons to visit: a wine hiking trail with views of Lake Neusiedl, routes through meadows and to the wind turbines, a long winemaking tradition, as well as the lido and birdwatching. For your planning, you can first choose what interests you most: route length and scenery, wine and history, or time by the water.

Trails and landscapes

The three trails differ in length: the FANTASEE Walk is 7 km, the wind farm route is 12.3 km, and the meadow hiking trail is 14 km. The wind farm route is therefore 1.7 km shorter than the meadow hiking trail, while the FANTASEE Walk is considerably shorter than both. The FANTASEE Walk also includes six informative stops in and around Weiden am See.

The destinations offer another way to choose: the meadow hiking trail passes through the meadow landscape of the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen, while the wind farm route leads to the turbines on the Parndorfer Platte. This means you can consider the scenery and destination as well as the route length when choosing.

The wine hiking trail has a different focus. It starts at the municipal centre and passes through the wine-growing municipality’s finest vineyards along the Wagram, with beautiful viewpoints overlooking Lake Neusiedl. It combines vineyard scenery with lake views, setting it apart from the meadow and wind farm routes.

Winemaking and local history

Winemaking in Weiden am See has a tradition stretching back more than 2,500 years. One specific historical record dates to 1617: a tithe register of the Raab Cathedral Chapter recorded the production of Ausbruch wine in Weiden am See. This entry is described as the oldest record in the world of the production of Prädikatswein. The long-standing tradition and the dated register entry show two different time perspectives on winemaking in the village.

Another historical landmark is the SchĂĽttkasten. Built in 1824 to store grain, it is now one of the most important sights in the municipality of Weiden am See. This building, originally used for a different purpose, adds another dimension to the history of winemaking.

By the water and watching bee-eaters

The lido combines facilities for children with a choice of different areas by the water. It has a large children’s playground and a small, safe sandy cove for children. The bathing beach offers a large sunbathing lawn and shade trees; there is also a sunbathing area right on the jetty by the water. The differences can help you choose a spot: the lawn and trees offer space and shade, while the sunbathing area on the jetty is right by the water.

For nature watching, the observation shelter on Ungerberg offers views of the bee-eaters’ nesting sites without disturbing the birds. The two locations therefore offer different experiences: the lido is about the beach and sunbathing areas, while Ungerberg is about observing the nesting sites.
