On the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, Gols lies amid an extensive wine-growing region. The wine landscape here is more than a sweeping impression: almost half of the municipality’s 4,223 hectares are planted with vines. Visitors planning a stay will find several different ways to explore Golser wine—from a circular trail and guided insights into the work of winegrowers to tastings at the Wine Culture House.

Experience the wine landscape along the trail

The WeinWegGols is a 9.8-kilometre circular trail. It starts and ends at the Wine Culture House. Along the way is the Ungerberg viewing platform, which serves as a resting place, has an information board and offers views across Gols’s vineyards to Lake Neusiedl. The Salzberg viewing platform on the WeinWegGols also invites visitors to rest, enjoy a snack and linger. The two spots offer different highlights: one has views across the vineyards, while the other is specifically designated as a place to take a break. Route information may change; for specific planning, it is advisable to check the latest information about the trail.

The WEINWANDERWEG offers another perspective on wine. Winegrowers lead visitors through the top vineyard sites, explain their work and show how outstanding wines are made in harmony with nature. This adds personal insights into cultivation and winemaking to the circular trail, without implying that the two experiences are the same.

Wine Culture House: Tastings and Architecture

At the Wine Culture House in Gols, wine lovers can taste wines and learn about the traditions, innovation and culture of Golser wine. More than 90 winegrowers and over 400 wines are represented there; the specific selection may change. The house is located in the oldest building in Gols. The restoration gave it a new lease of life with contemporary architecture and pioneering design. Wine interpretation and a building with a long history thus come together in a place with a modern design.

Museum and further discoveries

The Erwin Moser Museum has a permanent home in the historic surroundings of the Wine Culture House in the centre of Gols. Across three exhibition rooms, it presents 65 pictures, sketches, manuscripts and translations by Erwin Moser, the children’s author and illustrator who was born in Gols. The different formats give visitors more than a single perspective on his work: pictures and sketches are displayed alongside written works and translations.

For a stay with water-based activities, Aquasplash Gols, a family-friendly leisure and adventure pool, is another option. Facilities include a long slide, a speed slide, a wild-water channel, a 25-metre pool and a toddlers’ area. As facilities can change during renovations, check the current offering before your visit.

Plan your dates and journey

The Gols folk festival takes place every year during the week around 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption, as well as on the preceding weekend. The festival includes a family and trade fair, concerts and dancing, a wine tasting and an amusement park. Exact dates and individual programme items may vary.

You can reach Gols by car via the Gols/Weiden feeder road from the A4 or via the B 51; local buses also run along the federal highway. You can travel by train from Neusiedl am See. Check the relevant timetables for bus and train services. When choosing a hotel, you can also start by deciding what you most want to focus on during your trip: the wine landscape and circular trail, tastings and the museum, or a stay during the festival. This helps you centre your plans around the Gols experiences that interest you most.
