Wallern in Burgenland is best understood through its local history: the bell tower on the main square dates back to 1784; the Marian column, works of art and the name “Old Village” point to further historical layers. The cycling bridge over the Einserkanal also gives the village a distinct connection to cycling. For travel planning, this creates a contrast between architectural history and a cycling route designed to cross the border.

Bell Tower, Monuments and Art

The freestanding bell tower was built on the main square in 1784. Its base measures 4 Ă— 4 metres, and it is about 12 metres high. These measurements give a clear sense of its shape: with a square base, the tower is roughly three times as tall as one side of its base. Because of its location in the village, it is classed among the village watchtowers dating from the time of the Ottoman invasions; only five of these are said to remain in northern Burgenland.

The Marian column on the main road was erected in 1875 under Pastor Johann Vayan and has been a listed monument since 2000. That same year, Erich Unger created the mosaic of the municipal coat of arms on the main square. The dates therefore refer to different things: 2000 marks the column’s protected status, while for the mosaic it is the year of its creation.

In 2019, a statue featuring stained glass was unveiled in front of the municipal office to mark Wallern’s 750th anniversary. The stained-glass panels depict Wallern and its partner municipalities of Wallern an der Trattnach, Volary and Kapuvár. Unlike the municipal coat of arms mosaic, the statue represents several municipalities; both works, however, portray different aspects of local identity.

The Old Village and Church History

The historic “Old Village” consisted of about 40 houses and a small church. It lay roughly half an hour south of the present-day village of Wallern; the site of the former settlement is still called the “Old Village” today. The name thus preserves a link to the former settlement, while the approximate number of houses gives an idea of its size.

The parish church of St Matthew was built in 1931/32 and consecrated in 1932. The construction period and consecration mark different stages: the church was built over the course of 1931 and 1932, and consecrated in 1932. This dated 20th-century church building adds to the older traces of local history.

Cycling Bridge and Other Local Connections

The Baron Gustáv Berg Bridge over the Einserkanal opened on 25 May 2013. A cycling bridge located south of Wallern’s built-up area, it has a span of 30 metres. It is intended to serve cyclists as a cross-border extension of the cycling network. For the bell tower, the focus is on its year of construction and historical classification; for the bridge, it is on its opening, dimensions and intended role in the cycling network. The two structures thus show different sides of the village: its historical heritage and its connection to cycling.

Wallern is known as the “Southern Gateway” to the national park. There is also a connection to local produce: Alles Gurke offers fresh cucumbers directly from Wallern.
