Sculpture art, winegrowing and trails through vineyards and meadows define Winden am See. The town lies between the gently sloping hills of the Leitha Mountains and the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl and is part of the Neusiedler See–Leithagebirge Nature Park. Choose from different ways to plan your trip: art and local history, getting around on foot or by bike, and wine tastings by telephone appointment.
Landscape and trails around Winden am See
Cycling and hiking trails around Winden am See and in the nearby Leitha Mountains lead through vineyards and meadows. The Winden cellar quarter is also on the cycling trail around Lake Neusiedl. When choosing a route, you can therefore distinguish between trails through wine country and following a specific route.
The N11 Panorama Trail runs through Winden am See and is listed as 27.23 kilometres long. The listed distances for the Discover Route – Across Winden are shorter: 4.29 kilometres, with a stated duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes. The Art and Wine Route also includes Winden am See; it is listed as 6.50 kilometres and 1 hour and 30 minutes. The two shorter routes therefore differ in both length and stated duration. Check the route details before setting out.
From Kirchberg, you can enjoy a view of Lake Neusiedl, which is 36 kilometres long. The viewpoint is best reached on foot or by bicycle. This lets you choose between a longer listed route and a visit to the viewpoint as a specific destination, without treating the different distance and duration figures as equivalent.
Sculptures and cultural history
The Wander Bertoni open-air museum is a notable place for art lovers: visitors can see around 600 sculptures, as well as numerous models and prints, on the grounds. The complex includes a gallery, a sculpture park, an exhibition pavilion and an open-air area with large sculptures. The Egg Museum at the Wander Bertoni open-air museum displays around 4,000 exhibits from around the world. Outdoor art and collection pieces thus offer different points of interest within the same museum.
Kirchberg also brings together art and local history. In the 1960s, sculptor Wander Bertoni created the sculpture “The Sun Worshipper” at the highest point of Kirchberg. Winden am See is also home to the parish church of St Florian: it was built in 1725 and renovated in 1984. This architectural history adds a religious landmark from another period to the picture of local art.
Winegrowing and the cellar quarter
Winden am See retains the character of a Burgenland winegrowing village; vineyards are part of the surrounding landscape, alongside meadows and fields. Most wineries offer wine tastings at any time by telephone appointment. If you would like to plan a tasting, contact the winery by phone in advance.
The Bacchus Cellar is in the Winden cellar quarter. This wine tavern serves fresh regional specialities daily, depending on the season. The seasonal limitation is important when planning a meal: the offering should not be assumed to be available regardless of the time of year. Together with the cycling trail that runs along the cellar quarter, the area highlights winegrowing and cycling as two different sides of the town.
Further traces of local history
The plague column was erected in 1646 and commemorates an event. Another historical landmark is the parish church of St Florian, with its construction in 1725 and renovation in 1984. These dates provide a timeframe for local history, but do not point to a particular visitor route.
North of Winden am See is Bärenhöhle – Grafenlucke, on the western slope of Zeilerberg, about 3 kilometres from the town. Its forecourt is offered as a picnic area; check the access conditions on site. This is distinct from Bärenhöhle – Ludlloch, which has been protected as a federal monument since 4 February 1929. The two cave references therefore concern different locations and offer different connections to natural and cultural history.
When choosing a place to stay, you can first consider which focus better suits your trip: the collection and sculptures at the open-air museum, trails through the landscape, or wine tastings by appointment. The listed route distances and durations can help you estimate the desired length of your outing; they do not replace checking the route details before setting out.
