A lighthouse about twelve metres high stands on the western edge of Podersdorf Am See, next to the small harbour. It was originally built as a navigational aid and to relay storm warnings to water sports enthusiasts. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and photo spot. Here, a historic function for water sports enthusiasts meets a distinctive visitor attraction on the lake.

Water Sports and Beach on Lake Neusiedl

PODOBEACH on Lake Neusiedl stretches for two kilometres. The PODOactive area offers water sports such as kitesurfing, surfing and stand-up paddling. The north beach offers good conditions for kitesurfing, with a high likelihood of wind and shallow water. There are four kitesurfing schools, surf shops and good beach facilities there. The north beach also has six beach volleyball courts.

The water-based activities each have a different focus: the wind and water conditions described above play a role in kitesurfing, while surfing and stand-up paddling are also part of the PODOactive area’s offerings. If you’d like to combine a day at the beach with some exercise on land, you’ll also find beach volleyball courts at the north beach. These options offer several distinct ways to enjoy the water and beach, without prescribing a particular itinerary.

Nature, Trails and Cycling Adventures

Podersdorf Am See is located on Lake Neusiedl, amid the landscape of Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park. Excursions through the national park offer insights into the special features of this natural environment. Gentle, well-marked hiking routes around Podersdorf pass through nature reserves, wine villages and culturally rich landscapes. This lets you look beyond beach activities and explore the natural and cultural landscape.

Cycling also offers a variety of ways to explore the area. Along the cycle path on the lake dam towards Podersdorf, salt meadows and reed beds lie on the lake side. A special cycling adventure with puzzles for the whole family is called “The Evil Plan of the Lake Witch”. It adds a story to the routes through the landscape, which unfolds as you cycle.

Church, Windmill and Local History

The parish church of Podersdorf Am See is a late Baroque building. It was built in 1796 to plans by the Viennese architect Pilgram. The original church had previously been completely destroyed by the Turks in 1529 and 1683, and rebuilt by the local population. The history of today’s late Baroque building thus sits alongside the church’s earlier destruction and reconstruction.

The windmill is another historic landmark. It has been privately owned by the same family since 1849 and operated until 1926. It is a rarity and a cultural monument of the highest importance, and is protected as a listed building. The church and windmill represent different chapters in the town’s history: the church is defined by its construction and reconstruction, while the mill is notable for its long family history and former use.

Local sports and wine culture also offer unique perspectives on Podersdorf Am See. The Austria Triathlon has been part of Podersdorf since 1988 and is one of Austria’s longest-running triathlon events. You can explore Podersdorf’s diverse wines on a walk from one winemaker to the next. This lets you focus your stay on water sports, the landscape, local history or the region’s diverse wines.
