Halbturn combines a significant Baroque building with a palace park that is open year-round, church architecture, and winegrowing. This gives you a choice of different themes when planning your trip: you can explore art and architectural history, set aside time for the park, or take a concert date and the winery’s visitor offerings into account.

Halbturn Palace and its art history

Halbturn Palace is the most significant Baroque building in Burgenland. It once served the imperial family as a hunting lodge and summer residence. Two aspects are therefore central: the building’s regional significance and its former use by the imperial family. This connection makes Halbturn Palace a natural starting point if you are interested in Baroque architecture and court history.

A specific work of art adds to this historical perspective: Franz Anton Maulbertsch created the ceiling fresco Allegory of Time and Light in 1765 as a wedding gift for Archduchess Marie Christine. Its title names the motifs of time and light; the year and occasion of its creation also place the work in a specific historical context. The history of the palace can thus also be explored through a single work of art and the occasion for which it was created.

Palace Park and Hiking Trails

The palace park is open to visitors year-round and offers opportunities for peace and relaxation in every season. It can therefore be a focus of your stay in its own right, alongside an interest in the palace and its art. If you would like to combine nature and culture in your plans, you can include the park as a separate stop.

The Burgenland Way of St. James runs through the palace park. Another route is a long-distance hiking trail of more than 300 kilometres that follows the old Amber Road. It comprises more than 13 stages, starts in Petronell-Carnuntum, passes through the park, and continues into the Pannonian dreamscape of Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel National Park. The two routes differ in scale: the Way of St. James is a named route through the park, while the long-distance trail places Halbturn on a route spanning many stages. If you plan to visit the park, check current visitor information in advance.

The Parish Church: Building History in Several Stages

The Halbturn parish church offers another way to explore the town’s architectural history. It was built in 1679 under Emperor Joseph I and is dedicated to Saint Joseph. In 1725, it was remodelled and extended according to plans by Josef Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. The additions included a transept, chancel, apse, sacristy, seigneurial oratory, and dome. The sequence of the original construction and later extension gives you more than a single building date to consider: you can trace the church’s development through two clearly defined points in time.

Winery and Concert Tradition

The winery at Halbturn Palace is now housed in the former stables of the imperial Lipizzaners. The building’s present use and former function come together here. The offerings include exclusive cellar tours and wine tastings. A tour of the estate’s lands, including a visit to Austria’s largest contiguous vineyard, is also possible. Advance arrangements may be required for this tour; if you are interested, check in good time.

The Halbturn Palace Concerts also offer a reason to visit for culture: they are Burgenland’s oldest concert series and will continue in 2026 with a varied programme and atmospheric venues. Unlike the park, which is open year-round, concerts take place on specific dates. If you would like to plan your trip around the concert series, check the 2026 programme and dates before making your plans.

Free, shaded visitor parking is available immediately in front of Halbturn Palace. As availability may change, check this information before your visit if you are relying on parking.
