Mönchhof offers a range of ways to spend your stay: wine tastings and traditional wine tavern cuisine, cycling routes that can also be used for hiking, and local and regional history. You can tailor your stay to food and wine, outdoor activities or culture, rather than trying to fit everything into a fixed itinerary.
Cycling and hiking
The B23 cultural cycling route leads to Mönchhof from Frauenkirchen, Gols and Halbturn. If you would like to cycle to the village, you can follow this route. The well-maintained cycling routes in Mönchhof can also be used as hiking trails. This means you can choose whether to cycle or hike these routes; plan your visit around the activity you would most like to focus on.
Wine tastings and traditional wine tavern cuisine
You can taste Mönchhof wines directly at the local winemakers’ estates. Wine tastings are available daily at the Anna Hoffmann winery. The winery’s traditional wine tavern serves regional specialities alongside the wines. Tastings and regional wine tavern cuisine therefore offer two related ways to enjoy a stay focused on food and wine.
During the Mönchhof Wine & Culture Days, 15 businesses open their cellar doors and invite visitors to an varied programme of wine, culinary delights and culture. Dates and participating businesses may change, so check the specific event dates if you plan to attend. Every autumn, cellar doors open in Mönchhof. At “Martiniloben”, the Burgenland festival celebrating the blessing of the new wine, visitors taste the new vintage. While the Wine & Culture Days feature a programme of wine, culinary delights and culture, the focus of Martiniloben is tasting the new vintage.
Village museum and historical insights
The Mönchhof Village Museum offers a glimpse into everyday village life and farming on the Heideboden plain, from around 1890 to the 1960s. The museum includes around 35 reconstructed buildings, all originating from the Heideboden plain. At the museum’s craft days, visitors can experience traditional skills in the workshops. The museum thus offers insights ranging from historical everyday life to traditional craftsmanship.
The historical walking tour also offers a distinct perspective on local history: the Cholera Chapel is a highlight of the tour in Mönchhof. Three fully furnished railway carriages can be visited at the former Mönchhof railway station. The chapel, museum and carriages each offer a different focus, so you can choose which aspects of village and regional history interest you most.
Tailor your stay to your interests
If you are looking for a hotel in Mönchhof, first decide what you would like your stay to centre on: wine and food, cycling and hiking, or historical insights. For a wine-focused programme, possible options include tastings at local winemakers’ estates and seasonal cellar traditions. Those interested in village history can explore different points of interest at the museum, on the historical walking tour and in the railway carriages. Check the specific dates of the Wine & Culture Days if this programme is important to your trip.
