The Zicksee gives a stay in Sankt Andrä am Zicksee a clear connection to the landscape. Other highlights include seasonal bird stopovers, opportunities for walking, running and cycling, local history and regional specialties. These themes appeal to different travel interests: you can shape your visit around nature, exercise, culture or food and drink.
Zicksee, Nature and Exercise
The lake at Sankt Andrä, known as the Zicksee, has a surface area of more than 120 hectares (1.2 km²). When full, it is more than 1.5 meters deep; water levels vary, so this depth measurement applies only when the lake is full. Especially in autumn, and occasionally in the winter months too, the lake is an important stopover for various species of waterbirds.
Surfing is one of the leisure activities at the Zicksee and in Sankt Andrä am Zicksee. Conditions and availability may depend on the season or water level; check before your trip whether surfing conditions are suitable for your travel dates. When choosing your dates, consider the two nature-related activities differently: autumn is the main season for bird stopovers, which occur occasionally in winter, while water levels can also play a role in surfing. Ground squirrels and campers live side by side at the campsite. If you observe ground squirrels, take care not to disturb these protected animals.
If you prefer getting around on foot, starting points for walking and running routes can be found at every doorstep in Sankt Andrä am Zicksee. The village is also a starting point for cycling: it is one of the places along the 154.08-kilometer NP1 Neusiedl am See National Park Cycle Route and the 8.67-kilometer St. Martins Therme connecting cycle route (B28). The different route lengths offer two options: the NP1 is the longer route, while the B28 is the shorter connection.
Church, History and Cultural Heritage
The Catholic parish church of St. Andrew is dedicated to Saint Andrew. According to the register of historic monuments dated May 28, 2024, it is protected by decree. The parish was first mentioned by name around 1700. Since December 2001, Sankt Andrä am Zicksee has been a World Heritage community in the Neusiedler See region; the region is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans national borders. Here, a local connection to church history meets the region’s cross-border cultural heritage.
You can also visit a monastery: the Monastery of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God and Saint Paisios of Mount Athos welcomes visitors for a short visit outside its opening hours, provided they call or send a message in advance. Arrange your visit before you arrive.
Regional Specialties and Other Interests
Regional specialties include ice wine, Trockenbeerenauslese (dried-grape wine), mead and sweet dessert wines. If regional products are part of your travel plans, they offer a specific culinary attraction alongside the village’s nature and culture.
At the Romy riding stable (Göghhof in Sankt Andrä am Zicksee), horse lovers can meet horses. If this is important to your plans, check current visiting options directly with the provider.
