Apetlon’s bathing lake was created from a former gravel pit and offers clear water, a spacious area for swimming and relaxing, as well as free admission. There are also salt pans, cycling routes through the Seewinkel landscape and a distinctive village history. When planning your visit, you can choose according to your interests: nature watching, outdoor activities or culture in the village centre.

Bathing Lake, Salt Pans and Birdlife

Apetlon lies in the Seewinkel on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl. Its characteristic steppe landscape is also known as the “Little Puszta of the Seewinkel”; the village is in the heart of Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park. The bathing lake is located within the conservation zone of an internationally recognised protected area. The landscape and bathing facilities thus represent different sides of the village.

Nearby, Lange Lacke is the largest of more than 40 salt pans in the Seewinkel and an important part of the national park. The landscape around the lake is characterised by a diverse birdlife, with thousands of birds. About two kilometres north of Apetlon, Darscho-Warmsee lies on the B20 salt-pan cycling route. In spring, summer and autumn, it serves as a breeding and resting place for birds. The warm lake’s seasonal role gives nature enthusiasts a concrete indication of when this habitat is important for birds.

The Lange Lacke Tour can be started from Apetlon. You can park your car at the Nationalpark-StĂĽberl; along the route, observation towers and viewing platforms invite you to watch the wildlife. One circuit runs from the car park at the NationalparkstĂĽberl via Seewinkelhof around Lange Lacke and Warmsee, also known as Darscho, and back via Martenhof.

Cycling Routes and Walking Tours

The paved B27 Lange Lacke cycling route starts in Apetlon and continues to Pamhagen. The salt-pan cycling route runs through Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, passing numerous salt pans, wet meadows, pastureland and vineyards. This offers both a clearly defined connection to Pamhagen and a route description highlighting the landscape.

The Neusiedler See-Seewinkel running park covers around 340 kilometres of routes and connects Apetlon with Illmitz, Podersdorf, Mönchhof, Frauenkirchen, St. Andrä and Vila Vita. Individual routes range from one to 16 kilometres in length. Rosalienkapelle is a starting point for hikes through Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park.

The Lackenreitweg, a circular riding and hiking trail, runs between St. Andrä and Apetlon. There you can spot storks, avocets and herons. Visitors can also explore the national park on horseback; check with providers in advance to find out whether suitable options are available.

Village History and Events

In the village centre stands the parish church of St Margaret. Construction began in 1792 in the Baroque style; five years later, the façade tower with its stone spire was built. Hufnaglhause offers another glimpse of architectural history: this Baroque house in the village centre is one of the last surviving buildings in the typical Burgenland style. It is estimated to be around 250 years old and is considered Apetlon’s unofficial landmark. A white stork family regularly nests on its chimney.

A cultural walk through Apetlon takes you to cultural monuments and provides background information. Its ten stops also offer insights into village life. If you are interested in the village’s development, the walk lets you combine this with the architectural heritage in the village centre; check the latest booking details in advance.

Apetlon’s Kirtag is a church-fair festival featuring a market and events that spans two weekends. Kirtag Sunday is the first Sunday after 13 July, St Margaret’s Day. Before travelling, check the dates and programme for your stay.
