Lago de Sanabria is the largest lake of glacial origin on the Iberian Peninsula. From this natural landmark, the view turns to other sights: the gorges and granite cliffs of Arribes del Duero, and a cathedral in the city of Zamora with an unusually designed dome. Nature and architecture thus offer different perspectives for discovering the region on your trip.

Landscapes, Wildlife and Trails

In Arribes del Duero, the landscape ranges from gorges and granite cliffs to a peneplain and dehesa pastureland. Outstanding animal species there include the black stork and Bonelli's eagle. The cross-border Meseta Ibérica Biosphere Reserve also brings together a variety of landscapes: it stretches along the northern border of Spain and Portugal and is connected with the province of Zamora.

Thousands of birds stop at the Lagunas de Villafáfila; their numbers and species vary throughout the year. The Sierra de la Culebra has the highest wolf density in Spain, but wolf sightings are not guaranteed. If you are planning nature-watching activities for your trip, these differences are useful to keep in mind: birdlife at the lagoons and the wolf density in the Sierra are distinct aspects of nature, not a promise of any particular sighting.

The Ruta de la Montaña combines hiking, horse-riding routes, mountain biking, and bird and plant watching. It passes through Sanabria-Carballeda, considered the most mountainous and rugged comarca in the province of Zamora.

There is also a clear starting point for circular routes: trails in the municipality of Zamora begin and end at Plaza Mayor de Zamora and are between 8 and 30 kilometres long. If distance matters for your plans, check the current route information. The Villafáfila visitor area can be reached via the N-630, turning off onto the ZA-701, or via the A-6; the exits are Villalpando/Villafáfila and San Esteban del Molar. Check current navigation information when planning your journey.

Architecture and Collections in the City of Zamora

Zamora's old town is protected as a historic-artistic ensemble. Its cathedral dates from the 12th century. Its most striking feature is the dome, clad in stone scales and supported by a Byzantine-influenced drum. The Museo Catedralicio houses a collection of Flemish tapestries, adding textile art to the architectural discoveries.

Other collections focus on different subjects. The Museo de Zamora is housed in the Palacio del CordĂłn, a 16th-century building in the old town. Its archaeology department features works from prehistory through the early modern period. The fine arts department displays a significant collection of sculptures and paintings from the 14th to the 20th century. The Museo de Semana Santa houses most of the groups of figures carried through the streets during Semana Santa. The festival was recognised in 1986 as a Festival of International Tourist Interest.

The castle also has a cultural use today: it houses the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Baltasar Lobo. Zamora is also part of the Ruta Europea del Modernismo. These connections offer a different way to experience the city than its medieval cathedral and collections.

Regional History, Wine and Crafts

Beyond the city, other historical sites invite exploration. At Castrotorafe, the visible ruins of a 12th-century fortress and the remains of the town and castle have been preserved. Check local access conditions before visiting. The Monasterio de Santa MarĂa de Moreruela is a Romanesque monastic complex dating from the late 12th century; visitor arrangements may change, so it is worth checking the latest information. The Convento de San Francisco dates from 1730 and has been carefully and extensively restored, preserving the original structure of the building.

The province's routes and products also offer distinctive highlights. The Ruta de la Plata crosses Zamora from south to north. The Vía de la Plata follows the course of the ancient Roman road between Mérida and Astorga. Vino de Toro is one of the four designations of origin in the province of Zamora. In the Toro wine region, more than 50 wineries dedicated to this wine offer tastings, participation in the grape harvest, explanations of vineyard work, and interpretive trails around the vineyards. Participating wineries and dates may change, so check arrangements for any planned visit.

Crafts take different forms: Pereruela is known for its pottery; casseroles and ovens are made from exceptional clay. Moveros has a long pottery tradition, and offers botijos, casseroles, and the distinctive vessel known as a cantarilla. These regional specialties add concrete insights into ceramics and wine to the landscape and cultural attractions.
