The Embalses de Congosta y Ayoo de Vidriales route covers 7.7 kilometres from Congosta to Ayoo de Vidriales. It connects the two reservoirs, where you can spot waterbirds such as great crested grebes and Eurasian coots. If you take nature watching into account when choosing a destination, the route offers a specific focus. Its length and named endpoints give the route a clear geographical framework, while birdwatching adds a connection with nature.

Water and landscape

Congosta de Vidriales lies at the upper end of the Vidriales valley, in its higher-lying area. The Almucera stream runs through the Congosta area. From there, a track leads northeast to the reservoir shore and a recreational area. The landscape connections thus range from its location in the upper valley to a specific destination by the water.

For travel planning, two different route descriptions can be distinguished: the route connects the two reservoirs and runs from Congosta to Ayoo de Vidriales; the track, meanwhile, is defined by its northeast direction, the shore and the recreational area. This lets you choose the landscape feature that interests you most: a connection between two reservoirs or a route towards the shore.

In the wider area around Ayoó de Vidriales, the Peña Santiago geodetic point is designated as a landscape attraction and viewpoint. It offers an additional regional landmark if you want to look beyond Congosta.

Churches and architectural styles

The parish church of San MartĂn combines a simple bell gable with striking interior details: the presbytery is topped by an octagonal dome, and it contains a Neoclassical altarpiece. The presbytery is the altar area; the dome and altarpiece are therefore in the same part of the interior, while the bell gable defines the exterior.

The forms at the Ermita del Rosario are different: its dome is hemispherical and decorated with geometric patterns. It also houses a Baroque altarpiece depicting the Virgin of the Rosary. The Rosary reference in the depiction is also reflected in the chapel’s name.

The two religious buildings can be compared by their dome shapes and altarpiece styles: at San MartĂn, the dome is octagonal and the altarpiece is Neoclassical; at the Ermita del Rosario, a hemispherical dome stands alongside a Baroque altarpiece. If you are particularly interested in church architecture, this comparison offers specific differences to focus on.

Festivals and when to visit

The festival in honour of San MartĂn is celebrated in Congosta on 11 November. The Corpus Christi festival takes place on the first weekend in July. These provide two different points of reference in the calendar: a fixed date in November and a weekend period in July. If you want to visit Congosta specifically for one of the festivals, check the exact date before booking and plan your trip accordingly.
