From the Mirador de Peña Centigosa, the view stretches across the Duero; at Mina El Carrascal, visitors can walk through more than 200 metres of galleries. These different perspectives give Villadepera a clear focus for your travel plans: riverside scenery and mining history. There is also historic connectivity, religious cultural heritage and traditional records of local life.

Viewpoints and trails along the Duero

The Mirador de Peña Centigosa has a walkway and viewpoints overlooking the Duero. Walkways integrated into the surroundings and cantilevered platforms are designed to improve visitor accessibility and safety. Both the river views and the design of the viewpoints are central here.

A narrow path leads from the area around Peña Centigosa into the Arribe. Experienced hikers can return to Villadepera via a circular route; check trail conditions locally. This is distinct from the GR-14 Moral de Sayago–Villadepera trail, which reaches Villadepera along the old Camino Viejo de Zamora.

The landscape can also be viewed from different angles. In the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, the Duero has cut through granite and metamorphic rock, forming a river canyon. Along the hiking route between Villadepera and Villardiegua de la Ribera, cliffs shaped by water over millions of years offer another scenic attraction. The Puente de Requejo also affords views of the natural park’s landscape.

Mining history at Mina El Carrascal

Mina El Carrascal is four kilometres from Villadepera. The gallery is thought to be of possible Roman origin; it was mainly mined in the 16th and 17th centuries. Walking through the galleries, which are more than 200 metres long, visitors can see part of an ore vein and the shaft that connected the different levels. The site thus combines a long history of use with tangible traces of mining.

Religious heritage and traditional local life

The Museo Sacro is housed in the former Ermita de San Roque. Its collection includes objects and vestments used in religious rituals over the centuries. Two springs also have different stories: the Fuente Beber is of Roman origin; the Fuente de la Santa is a spring with iron-rich water that was believed to have healing properties.

Villadepera also preserves an old communal alquitara, the old Lagar de las Escabadas and the Tejar de la Laguna. Along with the Museo Sacro, these sites add further aspects of local history to the landscape and mining themes. For your choice of things to see, this means Villadepera offers not only viewpoints and trails, but also religious heritage and traditional local customs.

Historic connections and October events

The Paso de la Barca between Villadepera and Pino del Oro connected the Zamoran regions of Aliste and Sayago. This historic crossing was in operation from the Middle Ages until 1914. The Puente de Requejo, popularly known as Puente Pino, tells a different story of connection: At the beginning of the 20th century, it was considered an important engineering structure and improved links between Sayago and Aliste. The two sites thus represent different chapters in the region’s history of connectivity; the bridge also offers views of the landscape of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park.

Two recurring events take place in October: the Ofertorio del Rosario is held on the first Sunday of the month, and the annual Legua Pino-Villadepera athletics competition takes place on the first Saturday. Check the dates for the relevant events in your travel year before planning your trip around them.

Whether you want to focus primarily on the Duero Canyon, mining history or the town’s traditional heritage, the topics described offer different ways to plan your stay. Viewpoints and hiking trails add a scenic touch; Mina El Carrascal and the historic connections complement it with mining and regional history.
